Local golfers will have a bit of ground to make up as the Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship heads into Day 2 today.

Lethbridge’s Darin Bertschi and Ryan O’Donnell sat at six-over 77 and tied for 60th as scores were still coming in on the opening day of the championship Tuesday in Medicine Hat. Joining them at six-over is Jerad Smith of the Vulcan Golf and Country Club.

One stroke behind the duo is Henderson Lake’s Justin Nagy and Jesse Sawyer of the Picture Butte Golf Club at seven-over 78.

The Magrath duo of Paxton and Russell Maxwell and Lethbridge’s Brett Sheridan shot first-day totals of eight-over 79, while Ethan Choi of the Pincher Creek Golf Club carded a nine-over 80.

Magrath’s Mitch Maxwell had a rough back nine after going one-under on the front to finish 11-over 82. Brian Dawydiuk of the Picture Butte Golf Club was 12-over 83 and Taber’s Andrew Makarchuk was 16-over 87 on Tuesday.
