It was the Lethbridge Hurricanes final game of the season, so they played a little longer.

Granted, it was only 21 seconds longer and ultimately the Edmonton Oil Kings emerged with the win, but the Canes still took a point off the Central Division champions following a 3-2 overtime loss in Western Hockey League play Tuesday night in Edmonton.

Oil King Josh Williams netted Edmonton’s first goal and then sniped the winner 21 seconds into overtime as Edmonton captured their third straight Central Division title, improving to 19-2-0-1.

The Hurricanes had a chance to move ahead in the third period when second-year forward Ty Nash was awarded his first penalty shot of his WHL career, but Oil Kings netminder Sebastian Cossa turned away the chance to keep things tied 2-2.

With the OT setback, the Hurricanes wrap up their COVID-19 shortened 24-game season at 9-12-3-0.

Williams got things going 10:12 into the first for a quick 1-0 lead, but Hurricanes forward Chase Wheatcroft knotted it up 4:59 later with his eighth of the season for a 1-1 tie after the first period.

Nash handed Lethbridge a 2-1 lead with 5:02 left in the second, but the Oil Kings tied it up before the second intermission on a goal from Jalen Luypen.

The teams skated through a scoreless third period after Nash was unable to score on his penalty shot.

Wheatcroft added an assist for a two-point night.

The Oil Kings outshot the Canes 39-29 as goaltender Carl Tetachuk turned in a 36-save performance for Lethbridge.

Cossa turned aside 27 of 29 shots.

Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.

Tuesday’s game marks the final WHL games for graduating Canes Dino Kambeitz, Mitch Prowse and Liam Kindree.

Kambeitz had six goals and 20 points in 21 games, Kindree added four goals and 17 points in 21 games and Prowse had five assists in 22 games.

Canes forward Justin Hall finished the season as the team’s leading scorer. The product of Edmonton had 12 goals and 27 points, playing all 24 games.

Defenceman Alex Cotton also suited up in all 24 games, leading the defencemen with seven goals and 26 points.

The Detroit Red Wings prospect’s 19 assists were tops on the team.
