Bulls charge past Dawgs Black

By Lethbridge Herald on August 5, 2021.

The Lethbridge Bulls only needed three innings to do the damage they needed.

The Bulls posted a convincing road win courtesy an 18-4 win over the Okotoks Dawgs Black in Western Canadian Baseball League play Wednesday night in Okotoks.

The Bulls scored five runs in the third and sixth innings and then added another eight in the seventh on their way to the lopsided win that improves them to 17-15.

It also gives Lethbridge its second straight win over the league-leading Dawgs Black (18-13) after a 10-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Spitz Stadium.

On Wednesday night, the Bulls hammered out 16 hits, led by leadoff hitter and shortstop Mike Fitzsimmons, who batted 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI, giving him 27 on the year.

Batting at the bottom of the order, Bulls centre fielder Josh Kabayama hit 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI.

Catcher Noah Or was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, Torrin Vaselenak was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI and Ty Wevers was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Dalton Demers hit 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Bulls starter Brad Goodwin earned the win for Lethbridge, going four innings and giving up one run and three hits, walking two and striking out seven.

Ty Doucette was 3-for-5 for the Dawgs Black and Max Hartman hit 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Quinn Tocheniuk took the loss for the Dawgs Black, tossing five innings and surrendering seven runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out four.

With the win, the Bulls pull within one-and-a-half games of the Dawgs Black and are a full game up on the third-place Sylvan Lake Gulls (16-16), who lost 3-2 to the Edmonton Prospects in the other WCBL game Wednesday night in Edmonton.

The Bulls are back in Okotoks tonight to face the Dawgs Red.

Lethbridge is back at Spitz Stadium Saturday night when the Prospects pay a visit.
