Canes trim preseason roster

As they head into the final weekend of their Western Hockey League preseason, the Lethbridge Hurricanes trimmed their roster by three players.

On Wednesday, the Canes re-assigned 2005-born forwards Logan Wormald, Nolan Viesner and Dustin Renas.

Wormald, 16, will report to the Yale Hockey Academy where he will play for the Under-18 program. The Langley, B.C. product was drafted by the Hurricanes in the third round and 45th overall in the 2020 WHL prospects draft.

The five-foot-11, 160-pound forward played in two preseason games with the Canes, posting a minus-1 rating.

Wormald had two goals and four points in five games with the Under-18 prep team last season.

Viesner, 16, will join Wormald with the Under-18 program at the Yale Hockey Academy.

The native of Kamloops who was signed by the Hurricanes after going undrafted in the prospects draft suited up in two preseason games with the Canes, going pointless with a minus-1 rating.

Viesner had six goals and ten points in five games last year at the Under-17 level with Yale.

Renas, 16, was selected by the Hurricanes in the fifth round and 104th overall in the 2020 draft.

Hailing from Saskatoon, he will play for the Warman Wildcats Under-18 AAA program in 2021-22. The six-foot, 175-pound forward played in two Canes exhibition games going pointless with a minus-2 rating. Last year Renas appeared in seven games with the Wildcats, notching one assist.

The Hurricanes are now down to 25 players on their exhibition roster, including three goaltenders, nine defencemen and 13 forwards.

The Canes continue their preseason Friday when they host the Red Deer Rebels at the Enmax Centre at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available for $10 at the Lethbridge Hurricanes office, the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Office, Gas King locations in Lethbridge or at the door for the game.
