Pronghorns and Dinos renew acquaintances in Calgary today

By Lethbridge Herald on September 24, 2021.

After their Canada West season opening win that also landed them the Suggitt Cup, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby team looks to move to 2-0 on the season today.

They’ll attempt to do it on the road as they travel to Calgary to face the Dinos at 4 p.m. at McMahon Stadium

The last time the two teams clashed the Dinos edged the Pronghorns 8-7 on a last second penalty goal in the 2019 Canada West semifinal to move onto the Championship game.

On Saturday night at the University of Lethbridge Stadium, the Pronghorns downed the Alberta Pandas, 53-7 and took the first leg of the Suggitt Cup.

Following the win, the Pronghorns debuted on the U SPORTS Top-10 list this week, ranked eighth in the country.

Pronghorns senior lock Abby Duguid set the tone early in Saturday’s game, scoring the first two tries of the game. She was also dominant on the defensive side of the ball.

Playing at scrum half, Caitlin Sears was also a standout on Saturday with her leadership and kicking game.

In addition to hitting four converts, she hit a penalty goal to open the scoring and her kicking for field position set up the Pronghorns attack throughout the game.

Today will be the Dinos season opener.

The Calgary crew remain a team that will challenge for the Canada West title.

Ranked one spot ahead of the Pronghorns in third in the coaches’ poll, the Dinos have played in the last four Canada West Championship games, including winning conference titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Scrum half Berlyn Seselja will be looked to to lead this season. Seselja is a two-time conference all-star and was a U SPORTS All-Canadian in 2018.

The Horns remain on the road again next weekend when they travel to Edmonton for the second leg of the Suggitt Cup with the Alberta Pandas.

The Pronghorns return home Oct. 8 in a rematch with the Dinos at 5 p.m. at the U of L Stadium.
