Pronghorns rugby clinches the Suggitt Cup

By Lethbridge Herald on October 6, 2021.

As the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby team captured the Suggitt Cup last weekend, one of their players was also selected as one of the Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

Taking home the Female Athlete of the Week award is Gwen Fillinger, while men’s soccer player Jeremy Dalla Costa wins the Pronghorns Male Athlete of the Week award.

As the Pronghorns looked to rebound after a close loss to the Calgary Dinos the week before in Calgary, the Horns headed to Edmonton Saturday for round two of the Suggitt Cup against the Alberta Pandas.

Thanks to a 24-3 win, the Pronghorns not only improved to 2-1, but earned this year’s Suggitt Cup following their season-opening win over the Pandas Sept. 18 at the University of Lethbridge Stadium

On Saturday, Fillinger contributed on both sides of the ball with a pair of tries, while keeping the Pandas at bay with her strong defensive play.

Brooklyn Perry and Mackenzie Hamm added the other Lethbridge tries. Caitlin Sears kicked two conversions.

The Pronghorns win puts them in the U SPORTS top-10 ranking at ninth in the country.

The Horns return home Friday to face the Dinos after a 12-6 loss in Calgary Sept. 24. Game time is 5 p.m. at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.

In men’s soccer, the Pronghorns dropped a pair of games to the Dinos to fall to 0-5 on the season.

Still, Dalla Costa – a first-year defender – provided some strong play on the back end, playing the full 90 minutes Saturday and Sunday.

The native of Calgary has started all five games this season.

The Pronghorn men’s soccer team will be at home this weekend, hosting the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday and Sunday at the U of L Stadium. Game time is 2:15 p.m. both days.
