Headwater Canes ready to host

By Dale Woodard on October 15, 2021.

After a 1-1 start to the Alberta Elite Hockey League season, the Lethbridge U16 Headwater Hurricanes are ready to take on the role of tournament hosts.

That starts today as the Hurricanes hit the ice for the Logan Boulet Memorial Tournament, taking on the Calgary North West Flames at 3:45 p.m. at the ATB East Arena.

Over the past two years the Logan Boulet Memorial Tournament has become one of the premier U16 AAA/Prep tournaments in Western Canada and this year will also feature the Edmonton Canadian Athletic Club, St. Albert Flyers, Caronport Prairie Academy, Okotoks Oilers, Wilcox Notre Dame Hounds and the Northern Alberta Xtreme.

The three-day tournament is also a chance for Western Hockey League scouts to check out players from the 2006-born age group prior to the draft in December.

“The staff and the kids are very honoured to take part in that tournament,” said Hurricanes head coach Garry Kimmen. “The Boulet family, minor hockey (and) Kevin Higo (hockey operations at Lethbridge Minor Hockey) have done a great job of putting it together and organizing it. The kids are excited and talking about it.”

Action continues today with three more games on the slate.

Okotoks and Caronport Prairie Academy hit the ice at 4 p.m. at the ATB West Arena, while at 6:30 p.m. Notre Dame faces St. Albert.

The Northern Alberta Xtreme and Edmonton CAC round out the day at 6:45 p.m. at the ATB West Arena.

The Hurricanes and St. Albert get things going Saturday at 8 a.m. at the ATB West Arena, followed by the Okotoks and CAC at 8:15 a.m. at the ATB East Arena.

Lethbridge plays later Saturday at 4:15 p.m. when they take on Notre Dame in the ATB East Arena.

“All of those teams have strong programs, every single one of them,” said Kimmen. “They were chosen because of their strong programs. So there will not be an easy game. It will be a test right from puck drop.”

The playoff round starts Sunday with the semifinals at 7:45 a.m. and 8 a.m. in both arenas.

At 10:15 a.m. in the ATB West Arena the seventh vs. eighth place game takes place at 10:30 a.m. and in the ATB East Centre the sixth and fifth place teams face off.

The finals go at 1:15 p.m. Sunday in the ATB East Arena.
