Copperheads go 2-1 on weekend

The Coaldale Copperheads went 2-1 in a busy weekend.
The Copperheads were downed 5-1 by the Okotoks Bisons in Heritage Junior Hockey League action Sunday afternoon in Okotoks, but downed the Kainai Junior Braves 11-0 Saturday night in at the Coaldale Sportsplex. That win came one day after a 5-1 win over the Junior Braves Friday night in Piikani.
The 2-1 weekend improves Coaldale to 5-5-1 to take over third place in the Southern Division, one point ahead of the 5-5-0 Strathmore Wheatland Kings and two points back of the 6-3-1 Medicine Hat Cubs.
The Bisons sit atop the Southern Division at 10-1-1 and are also tied for first overall in the HJHL with the Cochrane Generals, also 10-1-1.
On Sunday in Okotoks, a three-goal second period powered the Bisons to the win.
Krishan Stocker scored on the power play in the third period for the Copperheads to make it 4-1.
The Bisons outshot the Copperheads 37-30.
Ethan Barrows stopped 32 of 37 shots for Coaldale.
On Saturday in Coaldale, the Copperheads scored six goals in the second period on their way to a double digit win as Coaldale outshot Kainai 66-11.
Brogan Booth netted a hat trick for the Copperheads and added an assist, while James Halverson scored twice and added an assist.
Derrien Tonin scored once and added two helpers.
Thomas Johnson, Kole Fujita and and Koden Lazar each scored once and added an assist, while Michael Lawson and Tyson Meier each had two helpers.
Brendan Stewart made 11 saves for Coaldale to earn the shutout.
In the weekend opener Friday, Copperheads Jason Creighton and Booth each scored one goal and one assist.
Meier, Braiden Burke and Lazar added singles.
Logan Leroux kicked out 19 of 20 shots to earn the win.
The Copperheads are back at the Coaldale Sportsplex Saturday night for a rematch against the front-running Bisons. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
