Pandas off to semifinals at provincials

The second day of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association high school volleyball provincials wrapped up on courts around Alberta on Friday.

At the 4A boys and girls provincials in Red Deer, the Catholic Central Cougars girls lost 2-0 (13-25, 22-25) to Calgary Bowness and Edmonton Strathcona (19-25, 23-25) to finish the round-robin 2-2.

On the boys side, the Chinook Coyotes beat Grande Prairie Charles Spencer 2-0 (25-17, 25-15), but lost 2-0 (21-25, 10-25) to Calgary William Aberhart to wrap up the round-robin at 1-3.

The final placings in the round-robin were still being determined at press time.

At the 3A boys and girls provincials in Westlock, the Magrath Zeniths lost 2-1 to Camrose (23-25, 25-22, 15-17) to drop to 1-2 and were playing Westlock R.F. Staples Friday night.

In the 2A boys provincials in Cold Lake, the Coaldale Kate Andrews Pride started the day with a 2-1 win over Edmonton Christian (19-25, 25-20, 15-13), but fell in three sets (25-23, 19-25, 11-15) to J.R. Robson to finish the round-robin at 1-3.

The other South representative, Pincher Creek Matthew Halton, beat Holy Redeemer 2-1 (25-8, 22-25, 15-13) and as of Friday night were playing Strathcona-Tweedsmuir.

At the 2A girls championship in Taber, the Magrath Pandas improved to 4-0 with another pair of wins Friday.

The Pandas downed Edmonton Christian 2-0 (25-16, 25-21) and ended the day with a 2-0 win (25-19, 25-19) over Notre Dame.

With their perfect record, the Pandas earn a bye to the semifinal today at 3 p.m.

The host St. Mary’s Auroras lost 2-0 to Notre Dame (25-27, 21-25) and Sexsmith Secondary (19-25, 24-26).

The Vauxhall Queens went 2-0 on Friday thanks to 2-0 wins over Onoway (25-9, 27-25) and Rimbey (25-15, 25-7) to improve to 3-1 on the weekend.

Vauxhall will take on Edmonton Christian in the quarter-final at 11 a.m. today.

In Peace River at the 1A boys provincials, the Picture Butte Sugar Kings were defeated 2-0 by Living Waters (17-25, 25-27) and were also blanked 2-0 by New Norway (25-7, 25-17).

Pincher Creek St. Michaels was also 0-2, losing 2-1 to HŽritage (25-23, 23-25, 6-15) and 2-0 to E.H. Walters (25-13, 25-15).

Picture Butte plays Paul Rowe in a tie-breaker today at 8:30 a.m.

At the 1A girls provincials in Lacombe, the Picture Butte Sugar Queens beat the ƒcole Des Beaux Lacs 2-0 (25-20, 25-17), but lost 2-0 to CACHS (25-17, 25-16) to finish 1-3 on the weekend.
