Hall’s shorthanded goals power Canes to OT win over Hitmen

By Dale Woodard - Lethbridge Herald on January 29, 2022.

Special teams powered the Lethbridge Hurricanes to two important points.
And it was veteran forward Justin Hall who quarterbacked the penalty kill en route to the Hurricanes 3-2 overtime win over the Calgary Hitmen in Western Hockey League play Friday night in Calgary.
Hall scored shorthanded 39 seconds into overtime for his 20th goal of the season as the Canes posted the win that improves them to 15-16-2-1 this season.
Hurricanes goaltender Jared Picklyk stopped 37 of 39 shots for his fifth win of the season that puts him at 5-3-0-0.
Hall also scored a shortie to get things going 7:41 into the first period before Ty Nash upped Lethbridge’s lead to 2-0 midway through the first.
But the Hitmen chipped away at the lead and eventually forced overtime.
Zac Funk cut the Canes’ lead in half 6:16 into the second period before Briggs Orr deadlocked it and forced the extra session with his first of the season 5:29 into the third.
The OT session didn’t last long as Hall drained the winner 39 seconds in with teammate Corson Hopwo in the box for slashing.
Alex Thacker had two assists in Friday’s win and Orr added an assist for a two-point outing for Calgary.
Hitmen goaltender and Taber product Brayden Peters kicked out 18 of 21 shots as the Hitmen outshot the Hurricanes 39-21.
The Hurricanes were 0-for-7 on the power play, while the Hitmen were 0-for-4.
Lethbridge continues their three-games-in-three-days road trip tonight when they take onto Rebels in Red Deer at 7 p.m.
The weekend winds up in Edmonton Sunday with a showdown against the Central Division-leading Oil Kings at 4 p.m.
The Hurricanes are back home at the Enmax Centre Wednesday when they entertain the Swift Current Broncos at 7 p.m.
