Pronghorns women win eighth straight

By Dale Woodard on February 8, 2022.

Make it eight wins in a row for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team.

The Horns headed north to Edmonton Friday and Saturday to face the MacEwan Griffins in Canada West play, coming home with a 2-0 sweep.

That gives the Pronghorns eight straight wins and improves them to 8-4 on the season, good for second in the Canada West Central Division behind the 9-1 Alberta Pandas.

Lethbridge earned a 72-56 win Saturday night that capped off a road sweep following a 74-64 victory Friday night.

Haily Weaver paced the Pronghorns Saturday night with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Savannah McMahon chipped in 14.

Jessica Haenni drained 11 points and Amy Mazutinec scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Pronghorns led 24-22 at the half and shot 42.2 per cent from the field.

Lethbridge also hit 28.6 per cent from the three-point line and 75 per cent on free throws.

On Friday, the Pronghorns outscored the Griffins 27-14 in the fourth quarter to post the win.

After taking a 16-8 lead after the first quarter, the Pronghorns were outscored 22-18 in the second quarter to hold a 34-30 lead at the half.

The Griffins led 50-47 after the third quarter before the Horns dialed up a late comeback.

Haenni led the Pronghorns with 20 points, while Weaver had the double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pronghorns shot 36.1 per cent from the field, 29.2 per cent from beyond the arc and 93.8 per cent on free throws.

The Horns remain on the road this weekend. They’re in Calgary to face the Dinos Friday and Saturday.

They’ll be joined by the men’s Pronghorns, whose games in Edmonton against the Griffins were postponed as a result of the Griffins not having the minimum number of players available to safely compete due to COVID-19 related protocols.

The Pronghorns are back home Feb. 18 when the Alberta Pandas and Golden Bears visit the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
