U16 Canes set for start of playoffs

By Justin Seward - Lethbridge Herald on March 16, 2022.

The Lethbridge Headwater Hurricanes U16AAA team is set to face the Okotoks Oilers in the first round of the playoffs beginning tonight on the road.
“We’re definitely going in as the underdog,” said Kevin Higo, Hurricanes head coach.
“We haven’t had much success against Okotoks throughout the regular season. But coming in to playoffs, I mean it’s a new game. I think both teams didn’t finish the way they wanted to. But with that being said, the guys have been good for the last bit here practicing. We took the whole weekend off, just because we haven’t had a whole bunch of time off.”
The team’s focus is on themselves as the postseason begins.
“Honestly, we haven’t talked about who our opponent is very much,” said Higo.
“We’re just focusing on ourselves. Whether we were going to Okotoks or whether we were going to Calgary or whether we were going to Red Deer —it didn’t really matter— we’re just focusing on ourselves and making sure that we’re doing everything we can to prepare for Game 1.”
Higo says when the team has had success, they play as a group.
“Working hard and working smart are two major components for having success and we need to do that,” said Higo.
“Typically, when we’ve got off to a good start, that’s usually helped in our success. So that’s what we’re kind of focused on right now is just a good start and then playing a completed 60 minutes. You know when you play in a league of all 15-year-olds, the game swings on shift by shift.”
Game 1 puck drop is set for tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Okotoks.
Game 2 will be at the Logan Boulet Arena on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. back in Okotoks.
