Former Lethbridge College student-athlete Jasmin Salmon won SAIT’s Female Athlete of the Year recently.

The first-year Trojan played for the national bronze medal-winning women’s soccer team and participated on the track team, where she got team bronze and set some personal bests in the 600 and 1,000-metre races.

“It was pretty good,” said Salmon.

“A lot of that went to how my team had performed through the year. We had a pretty exceptional season. I definitely wasn’t expecting it, but it was nice to be recognized at a new institution.”

The Medicine Hat product said they had a really strong team from a soccer standpoint.

“Meaghan Wiebe on our team was ACAC’s Rookie of the Year and she also competed in track — so I thought she was really good contender,” said Salmon.

“And women’s basketball had a pretty good year as well. So, it was a nice surprise.”

She says the season started really weird because they had just taken a year off due to COVID, and coming back was a little tricky.

“Then when I played for Lethbridge, our rivals were kind of SAIT, so I wasn’t sure how smooth that transition would be but they welcomed me with open arms,” she said.

“And we had a successful start to the season and it carried on from there.”

The Trojans women’s track team placed third overall this year.

Salmon also took home the Zahavich Family Medal of Excellence and the indoor track team’s Trojan of the Year awards.

Salmon attended LC for two years prior to arriving at SAIT in Calgary, where she participated in the same sports. She completed her Corrections Diploma at LC and now will complete the paramedic program in June at SAIT.
