Hurricanes clinch playoff spot in overtime loss to the Red Deer Rebels

The Red Deer Rebels came back and beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-4 in overtime on Friday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

Despite the loss, the Hurricanes clinched a playoff spot for the sixth straight season.

The Rebels’ Ben King played overtime hero as he notched his 49th goal of the campaign just 2:56 into the extra session to secure the home side’s 44th win of the season.

It was the Rebels who got the scoring started in the first period as Talon Brigley scored his eighth of the season unassisted at 6:52.

Kalan Lind made it 2-0 at 17:41 with the assists going to Christoffer Sedoff and King. It was all Hurricanes in the second as Yegor Klavdiev got Lethbridge on the board with his 19th goal of the year at 3:50 from Alex Thacker and Justin Hall.

Logan Wormald tied the game up at 2 with his 13th at 10:29 of the middle frame from Jett Jones and Tyson Laventure.

Noah Chadwick would push the visitors ahead 3-2 with his second of the campaign at 17:20.

Jayden Grubbe of the Rebels would tie the game up once again just 40 seconds into the third period.

Wormald scored his second of the night on the powerplay from Joe Arntsen  to push the Hurricanes ahead 4-3 at 8:33 of the third.

Sedoff tied the game up at 4 at the 12:04 of the third from King and Liam Keeler and sent the game to overtime.

Shots were 35-33 Red Deer.

Lethbridge went 1-for-2 on the powerplay, while Red Deer went 1-for-4.

The Hurricanes are right back it tonight as they host the Calgary Hitmen at the Enmax Centre (7 p.m.).
