Lethbridge American Legion Baseball Miners team were back in game action over the weekend at home and were able split their four weekend games against Cranbrook and Calgary.
The Miners opened up with a 9-8 in-conference win against the Calgary Strive and followed up by a 12-8 non-conference win over the Cranbrook Bandits on Saturday.
The Bandits would get redemption on Sunday with a 14-4 win and Strive would close out the four-game set with a 10-2 win over the Miners.
“Well, Saturday was a really good day for us,” said Miners head coach Nicholas Ankermann.
“We were hitting the ball well, we were pitching well, so we were able to pull out two wins on the Saturday there which was kind of a good way to get things started. And then on the Sunday, unfortunately we didn’t have as good of luck with our bats that day. We just were getting unlucky not really finding any of those holes, whereas the teams that we played against, they were finding all the holes while they were hitting.”
Ankermann was impress with the team’s aggressive hitting approaches and in particular jumping on the first pitch over the four games.
“Usually the first pitch is the best pitch you’ll most likely see (at) all at bats,” said Ankermann.
“So they were doing pretty good at jumping at that first pitch during the Saturday games. Sunday games were a little bit more hesitant (in) seeing different velocity arms — either really slow arms or really fast arms — and weren’t quite able to take those adjustments on the Sunday unfortunately.”
He liked how the pitchers battled all weekend long with the defence being a flaw in the team’s game this early in the season.
The Miners are heading to Cranbrook this weekend for games.
