Lethbridge College Kodiaks soccer teams had a successful weekend to open the Alberta College Athletic Conference regular season.

The women’s team had no trouble finding the back of the net as they outscored their opponents 15-0, with a 7-0 win to open the season on Friday at Ambrose and winning their home opener 8-0 on Sunday versus the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.

“I felt like we played better in the second half —more ball movement (and) more runs into open space,” said Megan Morrison, after the home opener win.

“It took a little bit to get going but after that it felt good.”

Morrison, who had six points on the weekend, said definitely communication and running to open space ,is what contributed to the big offensive output on Sunday.

“Our corners definitely helped a lot (and) just good ball placement,” said Morrison.

Morrison thinks the strengths of this Kodiak team is the speed up top, ball possession in the middle and strong movement in the back.

“We’ve got strong defenders who will stop any incoming balls,” she said.

“I thought there’s  times in the game we were a little sloppier than we want them to be,” said head coach Sean Carey, after Sunday’s win.

“But at the end of the day,  it’s about taking chances and winning. I thought defensively again we were solid. You know two clean sheets over the weekend is really something we’re striving for. Defense wins championships and we want to be that way. But yeah it’s nice for a few of the girls to get a lot of goals and get that confidence going into another weekend.”

The women’s team will look to 3-0 on the season when they host the Olds College Broncos on Saturday at noon.

The men’s team opened with a 1-0 win at Ambrose on Friday and came back to tie Medicine Hat College 2-2 in their home opener.

The team is younger with dressing nine rookies this season.

“I think overall with being such a new team this year  and  you know nine guys over the weekend  making their Kodiak debuts, I think we can’t complain about a four-point weekend,” said Carey.

Carey said they definitely deserved something out of it against the Rattlers.

“Chances wise and the creativity we showed was a little better than them,” said Carey.

“So yeah it’s always nice to get a good weekend behind you at the beginning and something to build on with two big games next weekend.”

The male Kodiaks will host the Broncos at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
