Hurricanes ship Nash to Winnipeg, land Zimmer

By Justin Seward - Lethbridge Herald on September 28, 2022.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes were busy on the trade front on Tuesday.

The Hurricanes traded fourth-year forward Ty Nash to the Winnipeg Ice in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2023 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft.

The 19-year-old Scottsdale, Ariz., product collected 66 points in 144 games with the Hurricanes.

“He plays real hard,” said Hurricanes general manager Peter Anholt.

“He’s a good skater (and) brings some speed to your line-up. We just thought that we could add more skill to our line up and get a little younger in these two deals.”

Anholt thought Nash brought lots of character and physicality to the line-up as well.

“We really liked the kid,” said Anholt.

“He’s an awesome kid and tough to see him go. But you’ve got to give up something to get something.”

The other deal that transpired on the day was seeing the third rounder in the Nash deal and a fifth-round bantam pick in 2024 heading to Brandon in exchange for Tyson Zimmer.

The Canes got a year younger by acquiring the 18-year-old Zimmer, who amassed 25 points in 82 regular season games over two seasons with the Wheat Kings.

“He was a high pick in the bantam draft (sixth overall in 2019),” said Anholt.

“And I think with our situation he can play centre ice and not only for this year but also for next year. So it kind of helps us because we’ve got two overage centre icemen playing here. So it helps us out as far as our depth goes. But he has some ability to score and he’s got a good skill package. We like the opportunity to bring him in and then see what he can do with our hockey club.”

“We just felt that he (Nash)was in his fourth year and maybe give him an opportunity somewhere else and Zimmer (is) probably in the same boat getting an opportunity somewhere else,” said Anholt.
