There were plenty of lessons learned for the Lethbridge Hurricanes after taking a 9-1 shellacking at the hands of Medicine Hat Tigers in the season opener last Saturday night.

The two teams will  battle in the rematch tonight in the Canes home opener at the Enmax Centre.

“I think the first game was a bit of an eye opener for our team,” said co-captain Joe Arntsen.

“You know we didn’t play like we wanted to and kind of got a way from the things we talked about and worked on all week. So we just came back, had another hard week (and) kind of just regrouping. If we stick to our game and play our game, I think we’ll be fine.”

With a young line-up dressed that night, Arntsen said they got a taste of what happens when you don’t show up in this league.

“You know, you’ve got to bring it every night and we didn’t have it in our first game,” said Arntsen.

“So we have to have a big game (tonight).”

Assistant coach Ryan Aasman said getting back to their game, when asked about how they will turn the tides in Friday’s home opener.

“We know what it is, it’s hard to play on a nightly basis,” he said.

“But we understand now we can’t take a night off and it was good to have a learning lesson like that  last week early on in the year to know that we’ve got to get back to it. We’re a high-detailed group that plays a heavy game. We’re not an easy team to play against around the league and most teams know that. We’ve got to get back to that every night with our structure — getting pucks below their defence and really try to create energy off out forecheck for sure.”
