The Lethbridge Hurricanes acquired Tyson Zimmer on Tuesday from Brandon and  he is thrilled for a fresh start with his new team.

“It caught me by surprise for sure,” said Zimmer.

“I mean I’m excited to get going. I mean at the start it was sad, it was emotional but now that I’m here, I’m ready to go (and) I’m excited. I’ve met all the guys and I’m excited to get going.”

He found out about the trade through Wheat Kings general manager Marty Murray.

“He said I had been traded here and you know it kind of shocked me,” said Zimmer.

“So I called my family and let them know.  But we’re both pretty excited to have me out here.”

He agreed that a fresh start was needed.

“Yeah, I mean I was talking to my dad and my brother and they said it was going to be a big thing for me and even the coaching staff, they said I think a fresh start is what you need,” he said.

The 18 year old’s focus is to have fun this season, play his game and do what he can to help the team win.

“The management said they like me, so I’m super excited to come here and show what I can do,” said Zimmer.

Canes fans can expect a player that goes hard, scores goals and passes the puck on the ice from Zimmer.

Assistant coach Ryan Aasman said he is a nice big body that’s got  a lot of upside with his offensive game.

“He’s a high bantam pick that’s excited to hit the reset button and a change of scenery might be good for him,” said Aasman.

“But we  really liked what we saw in the video and playing against him last year. He always seemed to have good games against us and we think he’ll come in and compete really hard and round out our forward group nice.”

Zimmer has always been a centremen with the capabilities of playing the wing.

“He’s very versatile being able to play both spots and as a bigger body that can play the  middle is always handy,” said Aasman.

“And you can throw him anywhere in the line up there for sure.”

The Russel, Man., product amassed 25 points in 82 games over two seasons with the Wheat Kings.
