Horns’ women’s soccer end season on a high note

By Justin Seward - Lethbridge Herald on October 20, 2022.

There was a big sigh of relief on Sunday afternoon for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s soccer team as they defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 6-1 in their Canada West season finale.

The win marked the only one for the team this season.

“It was good,” said head coach Macky Singh.

“We actually started yesterday (Saturday) against University of Manitoba. We had a plan and we really executed and we missed out on the game against Manitoba, losing one-mill. We had a lot of chances and was hoping to get at least a draw yesterday. But today, the girls came out (and) played the way we needed to play, especially in the last game of the season, and also recognize some of the seniors moving on.”

Singh thought it was important to finish the season on a high note.

“And the fact that we wanted to finish on a good (note) kind of thing was very important and I’m glad it worked out,” said Singh.

“The game wasn’t a close one, it was pretty much a blow-out which was a fantastic way to go out as well.”

Graduating goalkeeper Erin Gill thought it felt pretty amazing to get that win.

“It was not the season that we totally wanted, so to go out with a bang was really nice,” said Gill.

Gill enjoyed watching the team create lots of passes starting from the back field and going all the way through and watching Hailey Slobodian score four goals.

“It was beautiful to watch,” said Gill.

“It was fun game to play.”

Gill said everyone was so happy.

This was the last game in a Pronghorns uniform for Gill, Grace Taylor, Kaleigh Harris and Rebecca McBride as they all graduated.

Slobodian led the way with four goals while Tory Clements and Alexis Bradford scored one goal each in the win.

The women’s soccer team finished with a 1-11-2 record.

The men’s team beat University of Calgary Dinos 4-2 on Friday and tied the Mount Royal Cougars 2-2 on Sunday.

Their record is 2-9-2.

They will wrap up their season on Saturday at home against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies this Saturday at 2:15 p.m.
