Canes knock off top-ranked Ice

By Justin Seward - Lethbridge Herald on November 23, 2022.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes halted the Canadian Hockey League top-ranked Winnipeg Ice’s winning streak at 15 wins with a 2-1 win at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg on Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes got off to a good in this game, as Tristan Zandee scored a powerplay goal just 6:14 into the game from Brayden Edwards and Nolan Bentham.

Zimmer made the game 2-0 with 1:40 to go in the first period as he capitalized on his own rebound and shot the puck top shelf over Ice goalie Mason Beaupit on the powerplay.

Edwards and Joe Arntsen picked up the assists.

Winnipeg found themselves with plenty of room early on in the second period in a 4-on-3 situation and failed to convert on the opportunity.

Canes goalie Harrison Meneghin was up to the task in the middle frame as he stood tall and made 14 saves to keep the Ice off the scoreboard through two periods.

Former Cane Ty Nash one-timed the puck past Meneghin 1:28 into the third period to cut the Canes lead in half to 2-1.

Conor Geekie assisted on Nash’s ninth goal of the year.

The Ice would pepper Meneghin with 13 more shots in the third period.

The Hurricanes fired 39 shots at Beaupit and Meneghin faced 37 Ice shots.

Lethbridge went 1-for-5 and Winnipeg went 0-for-3 on the powerplay.

Meneghin earned first star, Beaupit took second star and Brayden Edwards received third star honours.

Winnipeg won 32 faceoffs to Lethbridge’s 29.

The Hurricanes are 7-1-0-1 in their last nine games and are 12-9-0-1 overall this season.

The Ice’s record falls to 20-2-0-0 on the season.

Each team now have a win a piece in their season series.

Both teams will battle again tonight in Winnipeg at 6:05 p.m.
