Canes split games in Winnipeg

The Lethbridge Hurricanes fell 3-2 in the backend of a mini-series in Winnipeg against the Ice on Wednesday night.

The Ice opened up the scoring for the first time in four games at 5:45 of the first period on the powerplay ,as Connor McClennon beat Canes goalie Bryan Thomson low glove side for his 17th goal of the season.

Owen Pederson and Skyler Bruce notched the assists on McClennon’s tally.

The Canes Miguel Marques chipped in his second goal of the season at 13:11 of the opening frame from Anton Astashevich and Jett Jones to tie the game at one.

Jones then directed in a bouncing puck at 4:27 of the second period from Tyson Zimmer to give the Canes a 2-1 lead.

Winnipeg’s Ty Nash scored on his former team for a second consecutive night as he wrapped around the net and a wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle beat Thomson to tie the game 2-2 at 17:29 of the second.

The Ice pulled ahead 3-2 as Zach Benson took advantage of Thomson mishandling the puck and a lucky bounce off the side of the net to deposit in his 14th goal of the season at 5:16 of the third period.

The Hurricanes pulled their goalie with over two minutes to go in the game and could not find a way to get the equalizer.

Shots were 21 a piece in the contest.

The loss drops the Canes record to 12-10-0-1.

Lethbridge had no powerplays and Winnipeg went 1-for-4 on the man advantage.

Benson took first star from the Ice; Nash was named second star and Jones of the Canes was named third star.

The Canes will have today off before playing the first of two games this weekend in Brandon against the Wheat Kings on Friday night at 6 p.m.
