The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team  got their first taste of defeat on Saturday, as the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings won 75-64 at Val Matteotti gym.

“I thought we had a better start on Saturday,” said coach Ryan Heggie.

“We had a 20-10 lead on Saturday in the first quarter and things were rolling better because we wanted to have a better start and then we just all of sudden hit an offensive wall. Red Deer went on a huge run that took us into a 15-point half-time deficit. I do believe we stopped moving the ball during that time frame. We started doing too much individual basketball which is not our style.”

The Kodiaks did manage in the third quarter to cut the deficit to six points.

“But Red Deer, they were very good yesterday (Saturday) and they were a tough team to beat yesterday,” he said.

“And they just seemed to push their will on us.  Every time we got close, they would get a couple of three (point) shots and then stopped us from scoring for three or four possessions.”

The Kodiaks (9-1) edged the Kings 91-88 on home court a night earlier.

The women’s team lost 70-50 earlier on Saturday to RDP to dop their record to 7-3.

LC women’s beat RDP 79-67 on Friday.

Both teams will wrap up the first half of the season at SAIT this weekend.
