The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns basketball teams remain winless through four games each to start the second half of the season after losing a pair of home games to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies over the weekend.

The women’s team opened the weekend with a 90-84 loss on Friday and followed up with a 91-74 defeat on Saturday.

“I don’t say tough, I mean obviously challenging, because that’s a good team,” said women’s head coach Dave Waknuk.

“They’re a very a good team. We knew going into it that would be a good team and I think for us coming off last weekend, we just wanted a better effort. And I think even though we didn’t get the results we wanted … the style of play we played with, the way that we executed, I was happy with it. You know that’s a great team, you can’t make a lot of mistakes against them and we did and they capitalized.”

Waknuk thought the Horns pushed well, defended well and loved the player’s energy and playing together as a unit.

“So there’s a lot of good changes from a week,” said Waknuk

“So even though the result’s not there, we’ve just got to keep getting better and keep playing that style.”

Jessica Haenni had 21 points, Haily Weaver scored 19 points and Milley Johnson added 14 points on Saturday.

“It’s always good to get balanced scoring,” he said.

“We know that Haenni and Weaver are going to score. But for Johnson to get 14 points on the board is big for us too.”

Haenni drained 27 points, followed by Weaver with 25 points in Friday’s game.

Haenni led the team with five assists.

“Yeah, the result isn’t what we wanted,” said Haenni.

“But we played some of our best basketball that we’ve played yet this year. So we were happy with it and it could only go up from here.”

The Horns women’s team now have a record of 5-9.

The men’s team dropped their Friday game 86-82 and Saturday’s game was an 87-77 loss.

Dak Deng had 20 points, followed by Kymani Pollard’s 17 points for the Horns on Friday to lead the way.

On Saturday, Deng led with 20 points followed by Pollard’s 14 points.

The men’s record now sits at 4-10 on the season.

Both teams will have this week off before heading to the University of Regina for two games on Jan. 27-28.
