Lethbridge Hurricanes hand out year-end hardware

The Lethbridge Hurricanes handed out its year-end awards ahead of puck drop on their last regular season home game on Friday night against the Red Deer Rebels.

Veteran Jett Jones took home the Harry Ingarfield Memorial Award as the team’s Most Valuable Player.

“Jones has had a career year in his final WHL season,” as read in the release.

“The Olds, Alta.,  product who was undrafted in the WHL Prospects Draft has set new career highs in goals (21), assists (28) and points (49) while taking  (the) most faceoffs than anyone else in the entire WHL this season. He has served as the co-captain of the Hurricanes for the last two seasons.”

Jones also took home the Fan Favourite Award for the third time in his junior career.

Goaltender Bryan Thomson won the Joan Kobal Memorial Award for his perseverance, dedication and sportsmanship.

“Thomson has faced much adversity throughout his Hurricanes career and over the last calendar year,” as read in the release.

“Missing an entire summer and training camp last year after recovering from off-season hip surgery, Thomson returned to the Hurricanes lineup only to be re-injured just two games in. The product of Moose Jaw, Sask., has battled to return and has been outstanding, posting career-bests in goals against average (2.58), save percentage (.921) and shutouts (3). He is also tied for second in all-time victories in team history with 58.”

Co-Captain Joe Arntsen was recognized for his community efforts with the Herman Elfring Community Relations Award.

“Arntsen, from Dinsmore, Sask., has been a great ambassador in the community this season attending numerous events including hockey practices and school visits throughout the season (and) going out of his way to always connect with the kids that are in attendance,” as stated in the release.

Arntsen also won the Top Defenceman Award.

The Top Scorer Award went to 20-year-old Cole Shepard, who set a new career high in points with 55 (20 goals and 35 assists).

The Three Star Award was handed to Tyson Zimmer as he was named a star 11 times this season.

Noah Chadwick was awarded the Hockey Hounds Scholastic Award, which goes to the player who displays a high level of academics.

The Hardest Working Award winner in 2022-2023 was  Hurricanes defenceman Chase Pauls.

Goaltender Harrison Meneghin won the Carl Trentini Memorial Award as Rookie of the Year.

On Saturday the Hurricanes wrapped up with a 5-1 loss to the Rebels in Red Deer to end the regular season with a record of 36-26-3-3.

The Canes open their first-round WHL playoff series against the Warriors on Friday in Moose Jaw.
