Lethbridge Hurricanes defenceman Noah Chadwick was recognized for his excellence in the classroom last week during the Memorial Cup.
Chadwick was named the recipient the Canadian Hockey League Scholastic Player of the Year, which is an award that is handed out annually to a player that best displays successes both on the ice and in the classroom.
“It’s an honour to win that award and it’s exciting to be put up there with the exclusive list of names on that trophy,” said Chadwick.
Chadwick has had an abundance of success educationally as he was able to graduate Grade 12 a year early, which allowed him to pursue his post-secondary endeavors at Athabasca University and Lethbridge College.
The Saskatoon, Sask., product averaged a 98 per cent in English 1150-Academic Writing at the college last fall and averaged a 93 per cent in an introduction to statistics class and a 91 per cent final mark in Psychology as a Natural Science at Athabasca.
“The biggest reason is really to sort of set myself up for the future,” said Chadwick, on priding himself to excel academically.
“I think after hockey it’s good to have that education to transition into a different role.”
For Chadwick, he perhaps may want to be a general manager in the future.
“That’s I think a good way to stay in the game of hockey and the business side (is) interesting and we don’t see very much as players. I think that’d be (a) cool thing to do after a hockey career,” said Chadwick.
Chadwick said it’s a decent commitment, when asked about hockey and academics balance.
“ It’s about managing your time effectively and just staying committed to the doing of school work consistently,” he said.
He is the first Cane to win this CHL award since David Trofimenkoff in the 1992-1993 season.
Chadwick beat out Carter George of the Owen Sound Attack and Alexis Morin of Chicoutimi Sagueneens (QMJHL) for the award.
Chadwick also won the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy for the WHL’s top Scholastic Player this season.
During his high school graduation, Chadwick received the Governor General’s Award, which is given to the student who has the highest grades in their graduating class.
Canes goalie Harrison Meneghin was recognized as a third-team all-star for the CHL.
