The Lethbridge Bulls got their first win against the Sylvan Lake Gulls this season after a 9-2 home victory on Wednesday night during Western Canadian Baseball League action.

“It felt good,” said Ryan MacDonald, Bulls head coach.

“We came out and put up four in the second inning, and had a good start from Lenny (starting pitcher Drew Lenehan) and yeah we just kind of put the pressure on right away.”

The scoring began in the bottom of the second when the Bulls scored four runs.

Kyle Yip grounded out into a double play with the bases loaded to score Carlin Dick to open the scoring.

Kalem Haney was next up to bat and hit a double to score Adonis Bernal and Josh Kabayama to increase the Bulls lead to 3-0.

A Tyler Monroe single cashed in Haney to make it 4-0.

The Gulls got a run in the top half of the third courtesy of a Jace Phelan double that scored Marques Abulhosn.

The Gulls second run came when a Matty Fung ground out scored Abulhosn in the seventh inning.

Lethbridge scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning.

A throwing error by the Gulls shortstop to home plate with the bases loaded and nobody out brought in two Bulls runs to give them a 6-1 lead.

Jack Kalisky then hit a  single to score Tyler Monroe.

Adonis Bernal then stepped up to the plate with one out and hit a sacrifice fly to score Scott Hansen to make the score 8-2.

Yip scored on a Haney double in the eighth inning to make the score 9-2.

Lenehan was the winning pitcher for the Bulls after pitching six innings, giving up a run on four hits and striking out two.

The Bulls (27-15) have won six games in a row and will look keep the streak going when they host the Fort McMurray Giants tonight.

MacDonald attributed the latest win streak to good defence and pitching.

“Up in Fort McMurray, we had two complete game starts from our pitching staff and that really helped us,” said MacDonald.

“Our bullpen’s  fresh right now and then our hitting’s been one of the best in the league all year.”
