The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s soccer team are heading to the ACAC soccer championships this weekend after clinching the last playoff spot in the South Division on Saturday.
While the Kodiaks beat the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings 2-1 in their second last game of the year, their head coach learned at half time of their playoff status after Medicine Hat College lost to SAIT.
“It’s just lots of confidence building as we get to championships,” said Sean Carey, Kodiaks head coach, on the win.
The team had no clue that Medicine Hat had been defeated as Carey didn’t let his team know during the game.
“We were pretty comfortable. Like I said on the bench, we just relaxed and just put our feet up,” said Carey.
Carey saw the girls as being patient and scoring quality goals.
“We could’ve had a few more but at the end of the day it’s all about getting the three points and we just stuck with a plan,” said Carey.
After a scoreless first half, Kyra Piekema opened the scoring in the 50th minute, followed by Megan Morrison in the 64th minute to make it 2-0 Kodiaks.
The Vikings’ Sophie Robertson scored in the 78th minute to make the score 2-1.
The women wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 win over Medicine Hat College on Sunday to finish with a regular season record of 8-4 and will be the third seed at championships in Grande Prairie this weekend.
Morrison and Shelby Bach scored second half goals for the Kodiaks in the win.
The men’s team fell 5-0 to Medicine Hat on Sunday to finish the regular season with a 5-3-2 record and are the third seed as well going into championships.
