University of Lethbridge Pronghorns swimming head coach Peter Schori has liked the progression of his swimmers in the pool so far this season.

Schori has liked what he has seen in terms of the continual improvement from the women’s team, despite it being a process.

“Like they, for the first time, can have a goal of winning a relay medal at U Sports,” said Schori.

“I guess you could always say, well it’s our goal to do that. But then there’s a time where it’s actually like it becomes achievable with a great performance and then it’s not a dream, it’s an actual goal.”

Having a good attitude and approach is what helping the girls be successful student-athletes.

“Our women have been pretty strong in the classroom for a number of years now and I almost see that they’re taking their success in the classroom (to) the pool,” said Schori.

What has helped the women’s side in the pool has been the increased recruitment from the LA Swim Club with the likes of Taryn Lachman, Makena Wood and Amelie Gouttin.

“It comes down to their effort over time and believing that they’re ready to be successful,” said Schori.

Horn men’s swimmer Raine Arden is graduating this year and looking to finish on a strong note.

“He has some good goals individually and he’s trying to lead our relay along with somebody like Parker Brown,” said Schori.

Schori has noticed how more responsible the swimmers have become for their performances.

“I think that’s one of the things that I really see (is) that they work hard and they have great attitudes,” said Schori.

“But taking that little bit extra ownership in enhancing their craft, … that’s a really cool thing to be part of.”

Schori considers the training to be “really great” as they prepare for the USport Championships in March in Toronto.

The Horns were able to get away to San Diego and swim for eight days outside after having a goal of being in the pool five time a week in December.

“When you’re away and you’re just focused on training and with your team, you get to a  … greater capacity for work,” said Schori.

Health has been a main thing in January.

“We’re working hard right now and trying to stay healthy because that’s our next phase as we go into competitions,” said Schori.

U of L heads to the Colleges Cup at the University of Calgary this weekend  before the USports Championships.
