Cyclones female hockey program recipient of Kruger Big Assist grant

By Justin Seward Lethbridge Herald The Lethbridge Cyclones female hockey program was one of 15 recipients for a $10,000 Kruger Big Assist grant recently. Kruger is Canada’s leading paper manufacturer of Cashmere, Purex, Scotties and SpongeTowels, and donated $150,000 to keep kids on the ice to play the game they love and by doing so helping 15 minor hockey associations across the country. “We had a parent from our Cyclones program just mention it to us and then our management group just kind of looked a little more into it and just following social media of past winners,” said Chris Fantazir, director of the female hockey program under the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association. “We were notified a while ago that we were a recipient of this First Assist, which is amazing, and then we’re in the running for the Second Assist (a $50,000 grant) as well—which is a fairly large grant — so it would be nice to win and be great for our association and the focus on female hockey.” Fantazir said the application was based on expanding female hockey in Lethbridge. “That was the application basis is building the female hockey and getting rid of some of those barriers and making it more accessible to those that don’t know female hockey and haven’t got involved in playing female hockey,” he said. Part of the funds will go more into more of awareness and getting more girls involved, says Fantazir. Funds will also go into registration fees. “It’s a little more difficult for finding funding for female hockey,” said Fantazir. “There’s been a lot more awareness over last few years. By Justin Seward Lethbridge Herald Following a three-week delay, the wait is now over as the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track and field team will have 22 athletes competing this weekend in Winnipeg at the Canada West Track and Field Championships. “Really good actually,” said Larry Steinke, Pronghorns head coach, on his feeling heading into the championship. “And had a really good session earlier today (Thursday) and everyone’s looking to be hitting on all cylinders.” Steinke says the team has just been focusing on the process. “And if they keep focusing on the same things in the training, the results will come,” he said. The Pronghorn men’s team has defending Canada West gold medalist Andreas Troschke, who is ranked first in weight throw, followed by fellow throwers Brayden Klippenstein and Xavier Crosby who are ranked second and fifth respectively. Parker Allen is ranked seventh going in. Freshman Irish Lauchlin will look to make some noise in the jumping category as he enters his first Canada West meet ranked second in the triple jump and third in high jump. Fifth-year jumper Clayton Wong is a spot behind Lauchlin in the triple jump and Jake Jessup enters ranked seventh. “On the men’s side, they’re quietly hoping to do a sweep of the podium and that’s very much in their grasp if they all have a really good day,” said Steinke. As for the women’s side, there are a handful of team members in contention of medals. Caitlyn Bailes is the topped- ranked Pronghorn, as she is third in Canada West weight throw in a highly competitive field. Following Bailes is first-year Jinaye Shomachuk, who sits fourth, and ranked top five in shot put. Naomi Klassen, Madeline Szabo and Myah Sluik will also compete in the weight throw. The duo of Mackenzie Kennedy and Makayla Dickinson sit fifth and sixth in the triple jump rankings. Sprinter Kimoya Edwards will enter her first conference championships ranked fifth in the 60-metre dash and will challenge for a medal in Winnipeg. “ The women’s results haven’t really shown where the women are as far as whether (they are) in peaking shape,” said Steinke. “But they’re also ready to go and probably will make some noise.” He anticipates that between seven to 10 athletes will go to nationals...
