Carney doesn’t walk the walk as a ‘devout’ Catholic

By Lethbridge Herald on May 21, 2025.

Editor,

Re: “Carney travelling to Rome today, will be among world leaders at Pope’s inaugural mass,” May 16.

The article states: “Carney is a devout Catholic…”  This is a false statement.   Marc Carney  supports and advocates for abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage.

The Catholic Church teaches, as everybody knows, against all of these.    The Church also teaches one cannot be Catholic and support any of these assaults against the family and the dignity of human life.

On May 15, 2025 Pope Leo XIV said in an address to the Diplomatic Corps:

“It is the responsibility of government leaders to work to build harmonious and peaceful civil societies. This can be achieved above all by investing in the family, founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman, “a small but genuine society, and prior to all civil society.” [2] In addition, no one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person, especially the most frail and vulnerable, from the unborn to the elderly, from the sick to the unemployed, citizens and immigrants alike.”

Maureen Remus, are you God’s assistant who decides who is “devout” or not?

BigBrit

Typical hypocritical statement from a god fearing individual.
One must respect the “dignity for every person” – unless that person is a member of the LGBTQ2 community who has no rights according to Remus. Same with a person dying with widespread metastatic cancer kept alive on machines and drugs – unless God calls them home. Same with a daughter , who because of incest , becomes pregnant , but denied an abortion because of the “rights of the unborn”. Same with a person of another faith or an atheist, denied access to Ms Remus’s afterlife because of their non Christian beliefs.
So here is my question to Maureen: Would you acknowledge , embrace and welcome a gay person, no questions asked? Would you allow a dying person kept alive on drugs, to end their lives using MAID? Would you allow a child pregnancy because of rape to be terminated? Do you support gay marriage? Do you accept a person of another faith without question?
Given that president Trump in all likelihood would say “no” to all these questions, do you Ms Remus support the president and feel he is a proud advocate of all things God desires?
Carney’s faith as a Catholic, devout or not, has little bearing on his ability to lead the nation in these times brought on by Trump himself and possibly that other “devout Catholic”, one JD Vance.

you tell ’em, ms reemus. and, you tell us, all, that one’s body is not one’s realm – it is the state’s.
why not have some real faith, all ye self righteous control freaks: faith that, in the end, god will send the unrepentant sinners to ever lasting hell, where they will exist forever in pain and misery and fire (what, no wieners and marshmallows?).
and, as a bonus to us all, why not look after your own back yards and let others tend to theirs.
ever the better would be to actually do some good works, such as housing the homeless, feeding the hungry, and exercising the actual compassion and the non-judgemental ways of the heart as per the one called christ.

old school

The opinions being criticized come from the Catholic Church and the popes address. Carney is not a devout catholic. He is a snake in the grass. Churches opinion, not Maureen’s.

lumpy

Oh, by the way ‘old school’ any more comments about the Muslim community you’d like to make?

BigBrit

Oh please elaborate and explain your unfounded reasoning. Where exactly in the Popes address does it suggest Carney is a “snake in the grass”? He didn’t – your words and only your words!

biff

kind of crazy how it all boils down to a snake, two naked bodies, and an apple.
it is also curious that the typical christian will see adam and eve as white. as all humanity comes from their loins, according to the gospel fable, how on earth do we get so many races? who on earth did cane and abel “know” to begat more white humanoids? perhaps is it our incestuous beginning that continues to undermine our genetic make up, as we stupidly and foolishly usher in our doom rather than make some relatively easy sacrifices (not goats and sheep) in terms of the consumerism and greed and fame worship that underwrites our doom.
alas

her entry trumpets the position of the catholic church; i take issue with aspects of that position. that said, nothing wrong with having beliefs. what is unacceptable is believing one’s belief system may be used to undermine the universal rights of another.

such a great reference is the bible. while not without points of wisdom, it sure weaves some tall tales.
might one help me out on this one: noah builds an ark, to save all the land creatures at the least. what i am not clear about: two of each requires a lot of food, lots of variety, and a lot of storage capacity, and, a lot of gathering; thus, did noah travel the planet by foot and caravan, from north pole to south pole, east to west (the real “discoverer” of the “new world”), or, did he do so by ark, getting it all done after only a few days of rain set the ark afloat, and with godspeed in his sails (what, no sails?), or, perhaps more believably, he simply borrowed santa’s sleigh and a few elves and flew the planet in a remarkable night, to return with all aboard and then onto to the ark?
