Conservative values were heard loud and clear in election campaign

By Lethbridge Herald on June 7, 2025.

Editor,

I am both appalled and amused that the Lethbridge Herald would reprint an essay from the C2C Journal. I guess Brock Eldon is not as cancelled as he would like to believe.

With all due respect, Mr. Eldon, you have been out of the country and may be out of touch. The Conservatives lost, not because they refused to participate in a ‘culture war’ but because they lost the plot.

Politics isn’t a hockey game, where you support your team no matter how badly they play. Politics is the people, all of them, as are our institutions, our schools, our media and our art. And the people of Canada are wonderfully diverse and forward thinking.

They are fiercely independent but still have the courage of their convictions to read history with fresh eyes and hearts, and to work to repair and restore what went wrong.

Whose history, literature and philosophy would you like us to read? That of the people who’ve lived here for thousands of years? That of the people who built the institutions of the last century? That of the people who came yesterday, or 60 years ago in the hope of building a life in a prosperous, inclusive and hopeful society? Whose faith, family and traditions would you uphold? Are you saying you require a DEI policy so that you feel like you feel more comfortable? Would you like us to erase residential schools, climate change, systemic racism and sexism from the books, so that you can fit in too?

Numbers don’t tell the story for sure. You may want to do some fact checking on the Conservative record on the economy. Pipeline anybody?

Conservative values were heard loud and clear in the last election, trust me. And they were rejected by so many Canadians, not because the party failed to infiltrate the institutions, but because the party only listened to the people they saw as the rightful owners of Canadian culture. Conservatives are the dreamers, the misty-eyed mythmakers of a past that never was. It is time to put on your big boy pants, Mr. Eldon and to accept that we have moved on while you were away.
