Vaccines for ostriches, not Albertans?

By Lethbridge Herald on July 26, 2025.

Editor,

I see that our anti-vaccine premier, Danielle Smith, is actually in favour of vaccines…but for B.C. ostriches.

Reading in the Lethbridge Herald (July 23, page A5), Danielle Smith comments that there must be a better way than a mass cull to deal with an outbreak of avian flu at an ostrich farm in B.C. She goes on to say there could be something to learn about “whether there’s an immunity or some kind of vaccine” that could be developed.

This is hilariously hypocritical coming from our anti-vaccine premier who is suggesting a vaccine for bird flu in ostriches. This is the premier who will now be having Albertans pay $110 for a COVID vaccine making it much harder for many Albertans to access. At the same time, Alberta has more cases of measles than the entire United States mainly caused by the unvaccinated.

Perhaps Premier Smith can explain why she is aggressively pursuing an anti-vaccine policy for Albertans but at the same time thinks BC ostriches could benefit from a vaccine. Time to get your head out of the sand.

I have nothing against B.C. ostriches but I wish Danielle Smith would show as much concern for Albertans’ health care. Is a charge for a flu vaccine next in line? Also, I would like to know where Nathan Neudorf, MLA Lethbridge East, stands on the $110 charge for a COVID vaccine. As usual, I can only assume he agrees with it as he has not stated his opinion but appears to “toe the line” rather than do what’s best for his constituents.

Southern Albertan

….yet another example of an unhinged UCP government in Alberta. What will it be next?

Fedup Conservative

In the meantime Albertans have been screwed out of another $142 million by settling one of the Coal Industry lawsuits that these Reformers created by destroying the protection Lougheed put on our mountains. Once again treating Albertans like morons and they don’t care.

biff

i feel people should have access to health in as many forms as health can be made possible.
smitty et al have their heads in the sand on this one

Chmie

Don’t be surprised if Smith gets these ostriches moved to Alberta, gets them vaccinated and then makes a law that ostriches can vote. Us humans can suck the big one.

biff

only if they are sure ostriches will always vote for anything calling itself a con.
