Separatists would be in for a surprise moving to the U.S.

By Lethbridge Herald on August 6, 2025.

Editor,

To those who find living in Canada so egregious – Why don’t you move yourself to the U.S.? The majority of us Albertans want no part of your plan – so why don’t you just pack up and leave?

Maybe your fantasy is that you will have it better under Trump and the American republic. I advise you to look closely: American capital has too much influence in Canada and Alberta now, but Albertans in the U.S. would be swamped in no time. The U.S. capitalist system has no time for “socialist health care” or any other kind of socialist programs, and those who struggle to keep up in Canada would flounder in their “competitive system.”

Cutthroat capitalism might look different under Neoliberal fascism on the horizon in the U.S. “Anything for a Buck” America includes it all, from racism to pornographic advertising. At least Canada offers a little softer gentler humanism.

I was involved in oilfield construction in the 1980s when Lougheed and Trudeau shut down the oilfield. Some of my friends thought they would move down to the U.S. and keep busy. Most who did lost everything they took with them. Fraudulent business practices are endemic. You don’t trust anyone. Your lawyer friends will have to tune up their game – it’s cutthroat big time. Casino luck to you.

I can give you many examples proving the American dream of “streets paved with gold” is mostly tinsel that’s fallen off the Hollywood fantasy. One of my business friends, a hard headed Dane who lived as a child during the Nazi nightmare, had come to Canada and built a heavy hauling truck company. He went broke hauling drilling rigs down to the U.S. and back for which he was never paid. Last I heard he was driving trucks in the new oil fields of the African island of Madagascar.

My advice? Take a thorough look before you commit to leaping into someone else’s fantasy. Lobbyists and talk show host agendas are mostly about getting people excited. Then they exit stage right with someone else’s cash.

hey, the doing work for sleazes that end up not paying sure sounds a good bit like trump.
in addition to a nasty economic system, and ingrained racism and bigotry and ignorance, the usa also has an ugly system of judicial injustice.

Lordy Lordy Lordy. Just watched City News 24/7 and people were leaving that wonderful NDP lotus land in BC and headed to Alberta where the grass is greener. This ought to blow up the heads of the Smith haters where in the comments from the crowd in this paper usually carry on about her being a Trump boot licker. What, leave NDP socialism for a freer market and opportunity in Alberta. Oh the shame.

they are coming here because they love your entries so much. just kidding. they are coming here because they know smith is such a forward thinking revolutionary. better say just kidding to that, too, because so many here take irony literally.

Well you got your 10 cents worth in – despite it being completely off the subject referenced in the letter .

Great letter Don The U.S.has reached it’s peak and now is in decline. .I’m sure Alberta will make the right choice and remain a part of Canada.

Well. That post offered nothing but an angry diatribe of hostility based upon not much of anything.

First – America doesn’t just let anyone in – so Canadians, like myself, considering the idea of moving to the U.S. have to apply and be accepted – no easy task. Though it might be curious to see how an asylum claim would be accepted based upon deteriorating affordability, risk to welfare from unavailable health care, and the acceptance of terrorism as a tool of political change.

Truth is there are a myriad on cons AND pros to moving to the U.S., based upon well considered reasons that don’t include “I had a friend who….”.

And yes, it is true most Albertan’s don’t support separation – yet. (Not the same as joining the U.S. by the way). You start attacking those who support an independent Alberta, then shift to why everyone should hate to live in America.

Canada – for me – is no longer a place I feel a relationship with emotionally. I live here. That’s pretty much it . Whether the U.S, some other place, or an Independent Alberta is in my future is hard to say. But my decision will be based upon a prudent consideration of many factors. But that’s just me. You go ahead and be angry.

seems like you have gone ahead being angry? canada is not perfect, but in terms of our basis whereby we have a common basis for looking out for one another with regard to health and education and old age and the like, there are very few other options like us out there.

Fedup Conservative

My American relatives envy what we have in Canada in regards to our healthcare system while theirs will put you in financial ruin being the number one cause of bankruptcies why would you want that?
