Don’t be fooled by the term ‘Alberta sovereignty’

By Lethbridge Herald on September 23, 2025.

Editor,

Danielle Smith has often spoken often of an “sovereign Alberta in a united Canada”. And if you are not paying attention, you might think that she is saying that she has no desire for separation from Canada.

But if you look closer, you will see that the word “sovereign” also means “independence” which is the end goal of the Take Back Alberta movement.

All the topics of the Alberta Next meetings are to that end. The separation movement is coming about now because the so-called separatists see opportunity and have now began slithering from their dens to push their narrative, which has caught the ear of the premier. They however, are not interested in a sovereign Alberta but a coalition with the U.S.

So, back to the “sovereign” Alberta idea, which again if you look closely will devastate our province as there is no “get out of jail” card if this movement doesn’t succeed.

The idea of an Alberta pension plan is flawed because it is counting on a certain demographic to fund the pension and Smith states that this demographic will get more out of the plan while paying less into the plan.

Where does one get more for having paid less? Well, maybe a yard sale, but not a provincial pension plan. The UCP government will also use this pension plan to fund the Alberta economy.

The nice thing about the CPP is that it is currently being managed by an independent committee, away from government intervention.

Danielle Smith indicated that the federal government has informed her that the RCMP will be moving away from rural law enforcement in the near future.

We will have to take her word on that for now, because I could not find information to justify that statement.

She mentioned that Grand Prairie moved away from the RCMP in favor of their own police force. In contrast to that, Coaldale had their own police force for years and then signed a contract with the LPS but hired the RCMP once that contract ran out. There was mention by a panel member that rural crime is on the rise and the RCMP are not able to respond quickly enough because of limited number of RCMP members.

She implied that an APP would be better equipped to handle this discrepancy, but that would require hiring many officers, putting them through training and equipping them with tools of their trade. This would come at a great cost to taxpayers and the benefits would not be seen for several years, if at all.

Anyway, I could go on but will say that the proposals of the TBA and the Alberta Next meetings are hypothetic and very self-serving, with no or very little plan, should so any or all the proposals fail.

I will not be putting my hand up in favor of any of the proposal because the risks are too great and I love having Alberta part of Canada.

I wonder what the separatists intend to do to make up for the loss of the many federal benefits/programs we currently enjoy. Surely seniors can expect to lose their OAS in addition to uncertainties around the CPP, for example. Efforts around equality of opportunity in education and health care are at risk, given how the UCP devalues them in favour of the exploitation of labour and land. So many things to lose, so little to gain.

Less than four seconds Sophie.
Yes, Quebecers can receive OAS. Another hair on fire, Smith bad, comment. Tell us why as Albertans we shouldn’t have the same benefits as Quebec and operate under the same governance standards. After all the QPP had a 9.4% gain last year. What did the CPP accrue and what percentage did you receive as an increase. As for policing the RCMP are vastly under staffed and have just had 98 million cut out of their budget. Seems Ottawa is in the on the game you detest. Basically goofy allotment of resources to have a federal Mountie handing out tickets in Balzac, when federally there are many larger fish to fry, money laundering, human trafficking, drug trafficking, precursors, election interference, the list is endless

Do you understand what ‘separation’ means?

“Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province in Canada?”

Dwayne.W

That is correct.

So now we know. The border is an hours drive south. Enjoy your life down there and do not genuflect too many times to the lying , egotistical, psychopathic, autocrat installed in the WH. Bye , bye…

I think Thomas Lukaszuk, former Progressive Conservative Deputy Premier of Alberta, has best translated this sovereign Alberta/united Canada word salad phrase:
“…being single within the confines of my marriage.”

Maybe those who run this province have an understanding of how other places on this planet do quite well with many times less the population, the tax everything that walks to death, and rabid socialism leading to all the strangleholds on the people a socialist state brings the people – everything we hear and read about – and so on – maybe this is so?

That’s backwards. When you have provincial governments in Alberta who claim to be Conservative, and aren’t, and destroy what Peter Lougheed created for us, this is the results.

There will be no separation by Alberta but there will be a separation of conservatives between the MAGA zealots and the true conservatives. Smith is desperately trying to hold onto her base and entice some of those other conservatives to her side. She’ll fail and be working for the oil industry.
