Make no mistake, Danielle Smith’s end goal is sovereignty

By Lethbridge Herald on October 18, 2025.

Editor,

I have been a fan of the popular reality show “Survivor” for many years. The participants are encouraged to “outwit, outlast and outplay” their opponents to win the million dollars.

I can’t help thinking that Premier Smith is using the this same strategy in governing Alberta. She wants to outwit Albertans with her Alberta Next meetings, saying that an Alberta Pension Plan is better for everyone, which is conjecture at best. An Alberta Police Force will better serve Albertans, but at what cost?

And let’s not forget her stance on separation; “a sovereign Alberta in a united Canada”! She wants to outlast the NDPs and bow down to the Take Back Alberta coalition to keep her job.

And lastly, to outplay the current federal government with her hypothetical statements that the federal Liberals are bad people and picking on Alberta.

She continues to reference Quebec when speaking of the unfairness to Alberta but Quebec is in the east and they have MPs from Quebec in the Liberal government.

It’s like that old adage, “if you can’t beat them, join them.” We, in Alberta just haven’t figured that out like Quebec has. Smith would like to control the federal government’s parks in Alberta and collect the federal taxes as well as asking the feds to check with her before offering support to Albertans, such as the Federal Dental Plan.

The end goal is sovereignty! I think we need to vote her off at our next tribal council!

Your comment on Quebec is laughable. Of course they want to stay in Canada. Who would want to give up the $20billion we send them every year?

So, in your opinion, we should just play nice because Quebec likes our money. Well I suggest we keep our money here in Alberta.

Chmie

That means Alberta should return the $21B that the Feds paid to build the Trans Mtn pipeline to subsidize Albertas oil industry. nvm the billions they send our way each year for healthcare, infrastructure, etc which Smith manages to forget mentioning. What will happen when the price of oil tanks which will wipe the smug look off the faces of separatists.

You do realize it’s our money they’re sending back right? Don’t get me wrong I have no desire to separate, far from it but to say the federal government sends their money back to Alberta is ridiculous.

Chmie

Alberta is fortunate to not have to receive equalization payments due to our oil industry. However, that will change once oil demand/price tanks which it will. Then we will likely be on the receiving end and not so damn smug.

Southern Albertan

Since equalization is based on individual income, the best way to keep Alberta money in Alberta is to raise Alberta provincial taxes, thus decreasing individual income and keeping the money here. Because individual income is lower in many other regions of Canada than Alberta, equalization is triggered to go there. Many still, do not understand how equalization works.

Alberta sends no money to Quebec at all. The Conservatives in Alberta wasted and lost exponential amounts of money on the most costliest debacles repeatedly, ever since Peter Lougheed was no longer premier of Alberta.

She is more dangerous than she appears.

Egomaniacs usually are. You have it right.
