The power of the powerless in Alberta

By Lethbridge Herald on January 28, 2026.

Editor,

There were two interesting developments lastw week which I hope will inspire many to reflect on their role in society.

In Davos, Prime Minister Mark Carney invoked Vaclav Havel’s example of the greengrocer in Havel’s  essay “The Power of the Powerless” who dutifully displays a sign in his shop window stating “Workers of the World Unite” even though he does not believe it.  The authoritarian regime only begin to change when shopkeepers remove their signs.

The week, in Alberta, more than a dozen lawyers in Camrose signed a joint letter documenting how the UCP government of Danielle Smith is undermining democracy and the legal rights of Albertans.  Two former Alberta Attorneys-General, who previously served in Progressive Conservative governments, were among those lawyers who signed the letter.

They have in effect taken down their shopkeeper sign.

What is important is what happens next.

Will other lawyers in other Alberta cities and towns follow the example of the Camrose lawyers?

Or will they stay silent and complicit with the erosion of the legal rights of Albertans by the Alberta government?

It may be time for all Albertans to ask their lawyers where they stand on this issue.

Remember what they say about “lawyers and shark infested waters”!

The Power of the Powerless, Interesting comparison. Forced to live within a lie. SCS, Sound Familiar. He “Czechs” all the modern day socialist boxes. Just tell us Chris, just what have you been deprived of since the current government was elected. Seems to me it’s the “spotlight”. PS, the judiciary isn’t under attack by the Premier, she just told them in a polite way to smarten up. There isn’t one person in the whole country who is not fed up with the catch and release Liberal policy. I can only muse that you support that policy. She is not off on activist and unelected judges. She is dead on. As a former politician and now anti coal and economic activist, can you add yourself to the list of where “ruled by nine” is better than elected representatives. Or do you feel different about elections.

You can bet he’s a lot smarter than you are because everyone is, aren’t they?

I agree with you. When we continue to see how the UCP conducts themselves, it definitely isn’t good for the well being of Albertans, or Canadians.

It’s pretty important to have an impartial and independent judiciary to maintain the rule of law.

This becomes even more important when faced with those who are inclined to overreach. It’s called ‘balance’.

Thanks Chris for the heads up. I spent years being involved with lawyers and knew how disgusted they were with these Reformers who were deliberately destroying what Lougheed had created for the good people and creating a financial nightmare for our children.
Thank god these ones spoke up. Must won’t because they don’t want to offend these stupid seniors believing every lie these Reformers feed them. They make a lot of money off ignore seniors, don’t care?

Easy to fool people believe the lies the UCP and Danielle Smith tells them. Really sad, isn’t it?
