Budget 2026: Delivering key investments for Lethbridge

By Lethbridge Herald on March 14, 2026.

AT THE LEGISLATURE- Lethbridge East MLA Nathan Neudorf

Budget 2026, Focused on What Matters, delivers several important commitments for Lethbridge and the South Zone, particularly in health care, education, and the infrastructure that supports our region’s growth. At a time when costs are rising and global economic pressures are affecting every province, our government has made disciplined decisions to protect and strengthen the services families rely on most.

Expanding Health Care Capacity in Lethbridge

One of the most significant announcements for our city is the $59 million investment over three years to expand cardiac and intensivecare services in southern Alberta. This includes establishing a new cardiac catheterization lab at Chinook Regional Hospital, along with added ICU capacity in both Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

For residents here at home, this means faster access to specialized cardiac care, fewer transfers out of region, and stronger capacity to meet the needs of a growing population. Improving health outcomes for Lethbridge families remains one of our highest priorities, and this investment moves us decisively forward.

In addition to cardiac and ICU expansion, Budget 2026 provides $10 million over three years to continue ongoing funding for renal dialysis upgrades at Chinook Regional Hospital. Enhancing dialysis services helps ensure that patients with chronic kidney conditions can receive consistent, high-quality treatment here in Lethbridge, reducing travel burdens and improving long-term health stability for families across the South Zone.

The province has also reaffirmed $35 million to support the Southern Alberta Medical Program (SAMP) at the University of Lethbridge. This funding will help create a dedicated medical education facility and expand training opportunities for future physicians. Growing our own healthcare workforce in the South Zone is a longterm solution to longstanding shortages and will benefit our community for decades to come.

Highway 3: Supporting Safety and the Regional Economy

Budget 2026 includes $152 million over three years for the next phase of twinning Highway 3, from east of Bow Island to Medicine Hat. While this stretch lies outside city limits, it is part of a corridor that directly impacts Lethbridge’s economy, safety, and longterm growth.

Our agrifood sector depends on efficient eastwest movement, and Highway 3 is the backbone of that supply chain. Continued progress on twinning strengthens trade, supports industry and tourism, and ensures safer travel for the families and workers who use this route every day.

Investing in Students and Schools

As classrooms across Alberta respond to rapid population growth, Budget 2026 provides major support to meet these pressures. Provincewide, the government is allocating $3.3 billion over three years to build, modernize, and renew school facilities. This includes projects already underway in the South Region and funding to help hire 3,000 new teachers and 1,500 educational assistants across the province over the next three years.

Here in Lethbridge, several key projects are moving ahead:

• École La Vérendrye – completion of the longawaited gymnasium expansion, providing students with proper space for physical education and school activities.

•Galbraith Elementary School – modernization and an addition to support an aging facility and ensure adequate space for growing enrollment.

•Holy Spirit Catholic School Division – completion of its new K – 6 elementary school, adding muchneeded capacity.

•Lethbridge School Division – ongoing construction of a new K – 5 public elementary school on the west side, supporting one of the fastestgrowing neighbourhoods in the city.

To support students and teachers in today’s more complex classrooms, Lethbridge School Division received funding for 10 classroom complexity teams, while Holy Spirit received 5 teams. These teams provide direct support for students with diverse learning needs, helping teachers manage increasingly challenging learning environments.

These investments, both in the buildings themselves and in the supports inside them, ensure Lethbridge students continue to learn in safe, modern classrooms with the resources they need to succeed.

A Responsible Path Through Challenging Times

Alberta is projecting a $9.4billion deficit this year. This reflects the reality of lower oil prices, rising costs, and the demands of a growing population. Despite this, the government is not increasing personal income taxes, and continues to prioritize core services like health care, education, and public safety.

Alberta still maintains the lowest tax burden in Canada, strong earnings, and a resilient economy, advantages we will continue to build on as we work toward longterm fiscal stability.

Moving Forward Together

For Lethbridge, Budget 2026 delivers meaningful progress in the areas residents tell me matter most: better access to health care, support for our students and educators, and safer, more efficient transportation routes that grow our economy.

My focus remains ensuring that our city’s needs are heard, understood, and acted upon at the provincial level. I look forward to working with local leaders, stakeholders, and residents as these projects move ahead.
