Protect others by wearing a mask

By Letter to the Editor on July 27, 2020.

Ignorance is bliss, right? When it comes to COVID-19 that is not an excuse. Please educate yourself. In case you are still confused about whether you should wear a mask or not, perhaps I can help. When the newest coronavirus arrived here in Canada, it was recommended that only those with symptoms should wear a mask. This was before it was discovered that many people that carried the virus, were asymptomatic. This is why everyone should wear a mask when in public where it is not possible to keep at least a two-metre distance.

I wear a mask when I’m out and about but many people aren’t. Here’s the problem. The mask I wear actually does little to protect myself. It is most effective in protecting others should I be positive for the virus. Those without a mask are protected from me, whereas those not wearing a mask could be spreading the virus and making others sick including myself, even though I have a mask on.

So, now that you have this information, if you still don’t want to wear a mask because you are worried about your rights and freedoms or it’s too much of a bother, then I would like to suggest you are just a selfish person that only cares about yourself and no one else. Please protect others and wear a mask when you can’t social distance. Just because we haven’t had a lot of cases here in Lethbridge doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen.

One more thing. When at the grocery store, please eyeball the product you want, make your decision and only touch the product you are taking. I saw a woman a couple of weeks ago, without a mask of course, pick up and maul every single package of chicken wings at Costco. This was after she cut in front of me as I was approaching the cooler. Needless to say, I didn’t arrive home with any chicken wings. One thing this virus has shown me is which people are considerate and caring and which people are selfish and self-centred. Thank you to all those, young and old, that care about others and wear a mask.

Solid advice Doug!

Mandating mask wearing isn’t a freedom violation. Sheesh, some people make it sound as if they’re being forced to get a microchip surgically implanted in their head. lol

If you think your freedom is being violated by wearing a simple mask to protect others, then you probably don’t want to get me started on the real and profound freedom violations that you are subjected to.

Great thoughts Doug! It’s amazing how many people are either a) completely rude and inconsiderate regarding the health and safety of others around them or b) don’t care about others. I’m at a point where I’m literally telling people who aren’t masked to stay away from me.
