Letter about daycare was offensive

By Letter to the Editor on August 19, 2021.

Editor:
What an offensive letter about daycare from Beverly Smith of Calgary. She seems to be describing some fantasy childcare in 1950’s Soviet Russia, not the modern, regulated daycares in Alberta today.
Virtually all day care staff have completed post-secondary education like the Lethbridge College Early Childhood Education Diploma.
As a community, we all benefit when every child has access to early childhood education.

I could not agree with you more. Some people have no idea how far we have come with understanding the importance and access for all of early childhood education. People seem comfortable with bailouts of big oil but what about investment into our most important resource. Our children deserve better. This government has failed to reach agreement with Ottawa is not a mark against Ottawa it is against the UCP government and their failure to do the right thing.

Agreed, and this is why early childhood education integrated in a $10/day universal child care system is not an expense, but, an investment. Other countries know, and have used this, for years, because they wish to be at the top of the heap not only for their economies but setting the base for being at the top of the education heap, in all fields. There’s nothing like starting, early.

I agree, indoctrinating the children when they are young is important. Speaking of Russia

I’m not so certain that early intervention necessarily results in indoctrination. When my youngest was in the womb I read passages aloud from Hobbs, Locke and, of course, Rawls, in the hope that he would develop a social conscience. He just told me on the weekend that he plans to vote for the candidate for the People’s Party of Canada. Talk about best laid plans gone awry!
