Sovereignty Act shows a lack of oversight by MLA

By Lethbridge Herald on December 14, 2022.

Editor:

The most egregious, shameless, and outrageously undemocratic power grab I can remember by a governing Alberta party was recently attempted. The Sovereignty Act was introduced, a piece of legislation so shockingly flawed that it elicited furiously panicked back-pedalling.

Critics on all sides of the political spectrum were loudly critical of Bill 1 and revisions were hurriedly made. What bothers me more that the legislation itself is that Deputy Premier and Lethbridge MLA Nathan Neudorf voted in favour of the first iteration of the Sovereignty Act.

When confronted the next day by reporters, he admitted that he hadn’t actually read it.

Yes, he admitted that he hadn’t read the eight-page act he voted in favour of. It doesn’t matter what your political stripes, or the ideology of our elected officials, we should expect better from the individuals that represent our great city. I hope he will provide better oversight in the future.
