Our community has lost a great young man far too soon

Recently we laid to rest a great man. He was honoured by his family, friends, colleagues, and community at two amazing events. His funeral, held at Southminster United Church, then an amazing night celebrating his life at Vimy Ridge Armoury. Both events had jaw dropping attendance. (Ref: Lethbridge Herald Odd and Ends April 18 for more details).

To make these events happen, fire departments and school divisions moved mountains to schedule coverage, and people travelled from great distances to ensure those closest to him could be there.

It was simply remarkable to witness what others did for my friend.

I share this because I want more people in our world to know what it takes to earn a sendoff like the one I was a part of last week.

This great man built a life based on the merit and potential of the individual, and showed up and worked hard- every day.

He was a man of many hobbies and interests, was polite and kind to all those he encountered. But did not surrender to fools and was ready to defend anyone in need.

He cared deeply for his family, his friends, and the community around him.

He was a master at his craft as a fire Officer and medic. He saved many lives.

In his (too short) 42 years the impact he made on the people in this city, through his personal connections, or the service he provided others was immense.

I was lucky to be one of his best friends and can say with confidence that the way he lived his life should be used as example to those who may be searching for their path.

Sometimes a great life is not that complicated…. it’s about showing up, working hard everyday and having a genuine interest in others.

You can make more of an impact than you may think.
