Trump presidency means more tariffs for Canada

By Lethbridge Herald on November 15, 2024.

Editor:

I wrote on May 21 the time of the dictators was just a shot away. And now it is actually here.

Donald Trump’s sweep of all four components of the active parts of the US government will be complete in a few days when the Republicans gain control of the Congress. On November 5 they took the Senate and the presidency; they already have the Supreme Court.

What does this mean? Donald Trump, with a revenge filled but attention deficit consciousness, controls everything. Here are things we should fear.

Tariffs of at least 10 per cent will be instituted. Southern Alberta feedlot beef, canola oil and margarine will cost American consumers 10 per cent more, and along with more than 1,000 other products and components from around the world, will start a round of inflation greater than the perceived inflation that drove voters to the Republican side.

And these tariffs will hurt Canadian businesses in February.

Criminal cases against Trump will disappear. The state charges in Georgia about Trump phoning state officials to find 11,000 votes so he can get closer to winning the 2020 election may be more difficult to get dismissed, but Trump’s enablers will find a way. So inciting a riot in which five people died and 1000 were convicted will vanish. Hiding tons of secret government documents in his Mar A Lago property and showing them off like a hobby collection? Sorry, never happened.

Trump will make a deal with Putin – which means Putin will keep a large part, or get even more of Ukraine and demand Ukraine not join NATO.

Israeli leader Netanyahu will get a free pass: Trump has already told him “Do what you have to do.”

There will be deportations of illegal immigrants, even those who have been in the USA for years with American born children. Some of those may even try to escape across our border.

All major judicial appointments will be approved by Trump. Example: Judge Eileen Cannon, appointed by Trump, was the judge who threw out the case against Trump hiding tons of secret documents in his home.

Elon Musk and other billionaires will get big tax breaks.

The rioters from Jan 6 2021 will get pardoned, even the ones who were responsible for killing security officers.

Elon Musk will head a government commission to “erase all discretionary funding” or 20 per cent of the government size, including money spent on health and environmental controls–but leaving in place the government grants he gets for Tesla and Space X.

Republicans will work to try to dismantle Obamacare.

Xi Jinping of China, Victor Orban of Hungary, Maduro of Venezuela, the Taliban and Modi of India will all get bolder when they understand that Trump, with his lack of interest in meetings and policy briefings, is by default making the USA isolationist. And in Canada, Danielle Smith and Pierre Poilievre will get bolder.

I started caring about American politics as I child I saw the live TV broadcast of Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech. I have followed their history and elections, and this was their most important election going back 60 years when Johnson defeated Goldwater–both were bad choices.

And here is where are, as before, sleeping next to the elephant and waking up with anxiety.

Holy Cow, are you ok. Are you an MSNBC of the View plant.

lumpy

Facts are facts. Allan brought them all up here.

Still don’t get it do you? While you can’t get anyone to agree with your stupidity you aren’t smart enough to understand that you are the problem? Sad isn’t it that you just keep on proving how ignorant you are?

old school

Trump will stop the wealth transfer to comrade Zzylinski. That money left in America’s economy will allow them to eat beef and margarine again. The phoney charges and convictions from democrat judges should be tossed. That was all part of Biden/ Obama/ Clinton attemp to get Trump of the voter card.

BigBrit

Typical meandering poorly researched nonsense. Americans are not starving, in fact the economy has been on an upswing and you conveniently forget the aftermath of COVID. YET ANOTHER MAGA / INFOWARS CONSPIRACY LADEN FALSEHOOD. Perhaps you should consider a move down south, you know , to be amongst like minded folk.

JimO

Americans are fools for electing Trump full stop. He is in only for himself and his family. Four years of him will be even more of a gong show than his past term of office. The people continue to drink his bs koolaid as do some here in Canada do with Smith and Polly

lumpy

“”He is in only for himself and his family.””
..and his mentally unstable friends!

Like the idiots who re elected Danielle Smith and ignored what she was doing to us. Once again as we saw on TV and from talking to those that were there 80 to 85% of the crowd were ignorant seniors believing every lie they were fed. Sad how stupid these seniors really are, isn’t it?

buckwheat

Sums you up.

We certainly agree with you yet these mindless fools ignored the horrific mess he created the first time. My American Relatives have all been conservatives, like us in the past, and can’t believe what their Republican Party has become, just like the conservatives in Canada. They state that it’s embarrassing to admit you’re an American these days.
Right wing extremists have gotten control just like people from Germany told me happened there with Hitler, with the help of the same sort of idiots like the ones writing on this blog who are just to dumb to understand how dangerous they are and can’t find anyone dumb enough to agree with them.

it is fascinating that people supporting trump see him as one that cares for others. time will tell, of course, but i expect this round of his presidency will prove a good bit uglier than his prior one. already he is surrounding himself with some scary, dimwitted, heartless characters…but, then again, bush’s cast of henchmen in the 2000s are perhaps the standard for human ugliness in a land that refers to itself as a democracy.
still, what is shaping into place suggests some nasty times ahead in the usa. as our neighbour, we can expect quite a degree of fallout here.
thank god for poilievre, our future pm, even though he seems unable to get security clearance. he will save us…about as well as trump will save the usa. hard to imagine that what the masses are willing to turn to for leadership is a bar set lower than anyone could ever limbo beneath.

Just considering Biden and Harris , you should be able to realize all her lame campaign propaganda she just had 4 years to work on. Higher cost of living and meanwhile Sending billions , yes billions to propagate a war . Hunter Bidens cohort Zzylinski laughing all the way to the bank while Ukrainian citizens suffer under his mistakes.

JimO

So I guess Putin has nothing to be blamed for and he should just be allowed to steamroll through the Ukraine Latvia, Eastonia etc etc.? Interesting how you forget that NONE of Trumps promises during his last term were kept. Yet he charge the US government triple the rate of his hotel to secret service and other officals. He lined his pockets and family while president. Oh and spent the most time golfing than sitting in the oval office working for the people.

Fedup Conservative

We think he has put a huge target on his back with all the Americans he has upset and you can bet he will get all his criminal charges dropped which will make it even worse.
Under him they had the highest number of shootings, the highest unemployment, the highest cost of living.
After the U.S. spent billions on training their soldiers to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan when the U.S. left they refused to fight because Trump had released 5,000 prisoners and they saw it as being too dangerous and refused to fight them.

biff

excellent points

BigBrit

She was vice president for God’s sake. Blame Biden for their societies woes if you wish , but get off of the MAGA bandwagon if you can, and look at reality.
“Propagate” a war? That is rich even from you.
I suppose Britain and allies “propagated” WW2? Careful how you answer.

buckwheat

The border csar. She did a great job. Pffft.
Kamala wasn’t even nominated , she was installed like a toilet.

Her nomination process notwithstanding, the new Border Czar, Tom Homan , is a man on a mission with no sense of humanity , legality or compassion , traits that Harris seems to have in abundance. Watch for increased border surveillance on the US side of the 49th. But then again, the appointment of Lee Zeldin as leader of the EPA somehow mirrors the philosophy of Homan and the other MAGA cronies.

buckwheat

Give it a rest. Those coming in and killing people are the ones without a sense of humanity. Without legal immigration your country becomes a cesspool.

biff

american soil born americans have been doing a bang up job of killing – their societal illnesses have oh so little to do with immigrants, legal or otherwise.

BigBrit

Fact is it’s a small % of those “illegals” killing , raping etc and these are not representative of those already here. Perhaps you believe also that Haitian illegals are also cats and dogs. No one is saying that we don’t need legal immigration, but we are talking between 11 and 12 million, some of whom are hard working and supporting families. That small % of course should be found and deported , no matter their family status.

JimO

Trump has now full control of all the different levels of government including the courts and can now run amuck to his hearts content and the MAGA cult agenda. As a convicted felon president , a rapist drug user as AG, a half worm brain eaten nut case, a russian spy in charge of intel and another sex nut as a defence official, this should be the ultimite american gong show. Trump always claims he is so smart and only hires the best yet yhe went through 5 AGs in 4 years and scores more in many other offices. How many will he go through this time around. Yet his supporters continue to wear their blinders.

it paints such a woeful picture, and all the worse is what you note is irrefutable.
one thing with the usa system, though, is that elected members are not nearly so forced into towing their party name line as are our puppet seals in canada. republicans and democrats in the house and senate will place pork barreling foremost, which is, by and large, placing the economic interests of their riding – thus, the big corp/private money that binds them – ahead of anything else. trump will of course pass through some of his hateful rubbish, but he will also be stymied. it will be interesting. and snl will have many amusing skits along the way.

Fedup Conservative

Would you like to see Russia come over the hill and attack Alberta’s oil industry to help them get control of North America? Are you going to ignore the fact that they are our neighbours on the other side of the Arctic Circle and we are an easy target if someone doesn’t stop what they did to the Ukrainians? How do you think Hitler was able to get control of so many countries before he was stopped, and why are you so damn stupid?

biff

i pretty much agree with your entry. the system is utterly corrupted. it is so deep and so far spread that it cannot be fixed via elections anymore. yes, one can vote and select the least worst nowadays. one can even believe in the never ending “change” slogans…but, the only change is more of the same, only by different elected figureheads. the real culprits are far removed from the electorate – they own whomever are the puppets the electorate returns.

With all the whining these Reformers have done about the high cost of living and blaming it all on Trudeau can’t you just imagine what Trump’s tariffs will do to you? Who are they going to blame then? It’s no secret that all our fruit and vegetables come from the U.S especially in the winter. The last cruise ship I was on with people from all over world they talked about how the COVID pandemic had created a huge increase in their cost of living with retailers using the pandemic as an excuse to raise prices. In other words it wasn’t Trudeau’s fault like these idiots Smith and Poilievre wants these mindless seniors to believe, was it? I feed the birds at our house and the cost of seed has tripled, and I know Trudeau didn’t do it.

buckwheat

There will be no tariffs. Smith and Trump will get together and dump Mexico.

Fedup Conservative

And you can prove that how?

buckwheat

It will take a week but you will see for yourself.

JimO

Trump and Smith are like Jim Jones and all their followers drank the same koolaid, which we all know what happened there except the Trumpers and Smithers.

buckwheat

When all reasonable comments fail you head to the latrine for yours. Pathetic.

JimO

And in your usual fashion you miss the meaning.

buckwheat

Well aware of your meaning, pointless however. Without substance, just running off at the mouth. TDS.

biff

please do not tell me a big space ship is not going to come for us believers

JimO

LOL, only if you watched Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.
