Dog owners deserve a voice on Peenaquim

By Letter to the Editor on May 29, 2021.

Editor: What do we as dog owners need to do to be heard about the unwanted frisbee golf course? This beautiful land could be turned into a huge dog park like The Sue Higgins Park in Calgary (if you have never been there, it is nature at its finest. Picnic tables, washrooms, and more fun than a pet store! So many different varieties of dogs to see and visit, and tons of opportunities to meet people!).
We could turn this land into something fabulous! I’m sure we could get many volunteers and fundraisers to help make it happen!!
I have taken my kids for years to Peenaquim Park to run with the dogs, climb the coulees, and play in the water. Such great exercise, adventures and fun!
Recently I have taken my 93-year-old father there. He doesn’t like to walk too far, but we go in the fenced area and make a couple of laps and then he sits on the bench and loves to watch the dogs run and play.
My point is, there is such an opportunity here to grow the park and have so many more people to make it a destination spot. To take young and old out to enjoy nature’s beauty in our back yard, whether they are on their own two feet or being pushed in a stroller or wheelchair.
Please, Lethbridge it is not too late to change the plans for this land. I, for one, would volunteer to help the frisbee golf club in any way (and I’m sure others would too) if they would relocate so that this would be a win-win for everyone.

The thing is this is public land and why do dog owners have any more rights to use it as other citizens? The disc golf course on the west side is very utilized to the point of people not being able to get on it. I’m neither a dog owner or disc golf player so it makes no difference to me I just want people to use our public facilities. And I’m sorry if this offends you but to say you would volunteer to help them relocate falls flat, because I’m sure 95% of the “volunteers” would be in the wind as soon as the decision is made to relocate.

And wouldn’t be fun to watch the dogs retrieve Frisbees
