Re: It’s time to reform the Canadian Dairy Commission (Nov. 12, 2021)
I heartily agree with this writer (Sylvain Charleboix) that the dairy industry and commission needs reform. He fails to mention other reasonable alternatives though.
We could let the dairy industry die a natural death.
* The extra costs mentioned may not be reasonable for many low income Canadians.
* Butter and cheese, are No. 3 and No. 5 on the list of the biggest generators of climate change causing greenhouse gases. (The Natural Resources Defense Council’s chart (https://www.nrdc.org/stories/shrink-your-carbon-footprint-ease-dairy).
* The consumption of dairy has been correlated to poor health outcomes including heart disease, diabetes, cancers. (Health Concerns About Dairy, pcrm.org)
* The dairy industry is inhumane towards its animals. (https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/b-c-farm-has-dairy-licence-suspended-amid-animal-cruelty-allegations-1.5653275).
The dairy industry’s 11,000 farms will share $1.75 billion over eight years. (Government of Canada Announces Compensation for Supply-Managed Dairy Producers.-Canada.ca, Aug. 16, 2019)
These subsides would be put to better use helping dairy farmers transition to alternative farming or businesses that are more ecologically sustainable, healthier for Canadians and kinder to animals.
It’s time to quit dairy!

The dairy industry may need some reform, however, the rest of the rant against the industry is just the usual environmental rubbish spewed daily by these interests. The point is consumers have every right to make their own decisions regarding their diets, without interference from detractors.
You tell ’em, Z.
The last thing we need around here is awareness and evidence when we decide to consume. It should be all about animal appetite, not reason! It should all be about ME, not my progeny or our animal slaves!! And don’t even get me started on that fringe group called Nature!!!!
It was dismaying to see that the author’s intelligent advice and suggestions were met with disdain. It’s ironic that you did the same to me when I presented you with the highly possible negative aspects of closing heating vents.
Anyway, for anyone who cares to look into it, consuming the mammary gland secretions of a bovine is most certainly not “Wholesome and Healthy” as the dairy boy’s propaganda has led people to believe.
Are you sarcastisizing my sarcasm?
(Actually I liked Ms. Senda’s thoughtful opinion.)
And sorry about not appreciating enough your concerns about closing off vents. My take-away on that is a few vents is okay (to save energy) but don’t go too far. Better to turn down the thermostat.
I wasn’t being sarcastic at all. I completely agree with the author’s implications of consuming dairy.
