In her recent opinion piece, Rachael Thomas notes that it was “an honour and a joy to walk among and converse with those who have gathered on Parliament Hill from all corners of our country.” Perhaps Ms. Thomas is unaware that for more than two years now, the world has been fighting a war with the COVID virus. In Canada, over 30,000 people have lost their lives. In the U.S., nearly a million have died. Worldwide, more than 5.5 million have died, a figure approaching the horrific casualty figures of the First World War. And many others have had their lives upended with long COVID and other complications. Healthcare workers are on the frontline of this battle, and they need all the help they can get. A collective effort is required to win this battle, where each one of us does a few simple things to protect ourselves and those around us. Nothing that really impacts our freedom. The more of us that implement these measures, the faster this pandemic will end. Are those on Parliament Hill freedom fighters? A more apt description would be toddlers who object to the simplest and least onerous of health care measures. I urge Ms. Thomas to take a stroll through the hallways of any ICU unit – how long would her joyful attitude last then?

Exactly! Again, to end up in ICU on a ventilator because of covid, is no small thing..in fact, more often results in death. It’s just not respiratory care, it could involve being comatosed, or, purposefully ‘paralyzed’ by medications designed to prevent straining against the ventilator. Then, all systems of care kick in, i.e. gastrointestinal, urinary, cardiac…..This, is what ICU staff do…there’s much more involved than what may be thought.
omg. if vaxed people have died or otherwise been in icu because of covid, blame the crappy vaxes. if health care has been overwhelmed, it is due to govts of all stripes not looking after our system near adequately enough. the systematic dismantling and corruption (lining pockets of pharma and producers of equipment) has come to be unequivocally exposed. we had ridiculously long wait times for far too many procedures well before covid.
dr. biff: do let us know where it was that you studied virology, infectious diseases and public health. How about posting some links to your peer reviewed studies vis a vis same.
Your comment is way beyond being labelled as crass. Shame!
you know full well that public health care has been undermined, and you should know that health care has not been exempt from the across the board corruption that sees massive piles of public money get siphoned away into the pockets of giant corp and the well placed. i stand behind my entry.
