Letter about Ukraine reflects naivety

By Lethbridge Herald on May 20, 2022.

Ramma Kher’s letter on May 6 reflects the naivete of those who have failed to learn from history.

The prime minister of a leading world power thought as Kher did.  If the world let this one aggressor have the territory he coveted from neighbours, then the remaining territory of that nation would be respected.  How wrong that prime minister was.  If  Kher’s analogue, in a position of adviser to that prime minister, was listened to by that prime minister, the prime minister was badly advised.

 Yes, this has happened before.

Germany… Czechoslovakia… Lithuania… Poland.  The prime minister was Neville Chamberlain of Britain.  The aggressor was Adolf Hitler.

If the Ukraine surrenders territory, Putin will be emboldened, and look like a hero to Russians.  They will do it again.  When Czechoslovakia was forced to surrender the Sudetenland, the nation became unviable and broke up, becoming a German vassal.  The Ukraine would be cut away until it, too, is unviable.

I have no doubt that there is misinformation about in this Ukraine issue.  Some claim the Ukraine is a villain that has supported Armenia’s neighbour, the Azerbaijan.  Nor can we be totally certain that everything being said about Russian atrocities in the Ukraine is true, but we do know that Putin said he wouldn’t invade… and did.  It is more credible than not that Russia is committing atrocities.

An atrocious aggressor must not be appeased.  We must learn from history, lest we be doomed to repeat it.

Putin should have been held accountable when Crimea was taken but everyone wanted to play nice and get that cheap Russian gas. Putin was biding his time till the moment was right and Ukraine wanting to join NATO was the excuse he needed. If there is anything that we have learned is occupations dont work. Russia may take Ukraine but it is going to be a lot of work to keep it.
