Drug dealers should be in prison, not on the street

By Lethbridge Herald on May 13, 2023.

Editor:

Through Canadian statistics I have found that from 2009 to 2021 across Canada there have been 2,510 people killed through either gun violence or accidents or suicides.

That’s all of Canada. Yes all deaths are sad and maybe could have been prevented!

That does not warrant the extreme so -called gun control that’s been put on legal gun owners who took a course, passed an exam, were checked out by local, provincial and federal police forces so they could buy, sell and own a gun.

These people are the ones being punished for owning a firearm.

These people are hunters, farmers and sport shooters who go to competitions to compete against other shooters and obey the laws that were already in place.

The criminal who uses guns in the commission of a crime could care less about the laws – that’s why they are criminals.

Now for the other problem – drugs:

According to the news a couple weeks ago almost 35,000 people have died from drug overdoses in all of Canada!

Also on the news – from 2016 to 2022, in Alberta alone almost 6,999 people have died here in our province.

So which one is being targeted? Guns control which is useless for the criminal element.

Why are the politicians not doing something about drug dealers?

They basically kill people and get away with it.

They are only charged with trafficking and not the very least with manslaughter.

We need politicians to change the laws about these killers who are selling drugs sometimes laced with other drugs to make the drug more potent, which in a lot of drug overdoses kills kills the drug addict.

Isn’t that murder?

If the laws were changed, drug dealers would go to prison instead of being released to go and sell more drugs to kill more people.

My retired Police Officer friends know all too well the stupidity that’s going on and point out that we don’t have nearly enough jail space to hold all these criminals. But they make another good point. Why are parents not educating their children, at an early age, not to get involved with drugs, or are their parents involved with them also? Like we are seeing some seniors bragging about taking them illegally for years?

biff

yes, think of all the people having taken alcohol, ritalin, dexedrine, caffeine, diazepam, ephedrine…with the likes of ritalin and dexedrine being doled out to freakin’ children. “drugs” are not the issue, but, as you allude to, education (the lack of honest and accurate education) is and has been the issue. add to that issue is what so. ab. mentions here – the sociological causes.
when it comes to “drugs”, as with anything we use, it is not so much the substance that is the primary concern – it is the dose. mind you, to get through to people so ridiculously brainwashed by lies and propaganda, coming most from the best at weaving and selling lies and propaganda, our govts…good luck changing things soon enough.

Wow! Quite a racist comment, wouldn’t you say? Do you refer that the Blood are not educating their children, or are addicts too? Are the grandparents bragging that they need to take care of their children?

biff

not meaning to speak for fed up, but having reread his post after reading yours, i do not see anything at all that references any specific group, save for some parents in general.

Again, here we are, trying to stomp out the drug scenario fires in a reactive manner. We need to start by dealing with the sociological causes of drug abuse, addiction, and its corresponding crime, proactively, and none too soon.

bladeofgrass

Addiction is a disease and is a genetic that is carried down from one generation to the next. So what sociological cause or cure do you refer?

Southern Albertan

Genetics does appear to be one factor in addiction, but, that does not erase the other sociological causes, which when researched, by the willingness of oneself, are numerous and there for the reading.

ugh! the same old “solutions.” does not matter that we have had about 90 years of stupid, ineffective approaches, approaches that have wasted vast amounts of public monies. moreover, they have been approaches that have violated basic human rights and have made matters all the worse.
so, we get more ignorance: reference to “drugs” as though all drugs are the same. ok, maybe a good idea to not only imprison and severely fine the sickos that have been making and peddling the most insidious and addictive drugs, the pharm cos and their ceos that have created this scourge.
however, because of our nasty drug laws that violate human rights, and that have actually been a root cause of overdoses due to the lack of quality control that the likes of liquor receive, we have lost far more people to overdoses/toxicity than we otherwise would have.
but, hey, when something doesn’t work, just keep on doing it “wronger” until it becomes right, right?

I agree Mr. Finley with both concerns.
Most of the guns used to commit crimes were smuggles in from the US up until now, but the growing concerns are 3D printers now used to make guns that used to be only good to fire 1 or 2 rounds before they were not good.
The new materials now have resolved that issue and with a few design changes, they can be used mutliple times, 1,000 to 5,000 rounds without major issues. That is scary since you can print them anywhere as long as you have the 3D printer, the ‘blueprints’ for it and of course, electricity . . . you RV, in a hotel room, at home or even in the bush with a generator.
Canada has a long way to go before it can properly deal with drug dealers. Our judicial and penal systems are a mess . . . a joke! They can’t even keep drugs out of secure facilities we call jails. How bad is that? Some people go into jails without being addicted and come out addicted . . . the penetentiaries have safe consumption sites in them . . . seriously, what a joke!
Our governments have all been too busy trying to attack each other trying to find dirt on the other parties, etc., so they can stay in power. They are more concerned about themselves and staying in power then the electorate, us ‘peons’ who have become third class citizens who are only there to pay the taxes needed for there poor spending habits. In some cases the dealers have more rights than we do!
We are seeing the results have ignoring the rising drug issues as we watch organized crime grow, along with their trades: human trafficking, child exploitation, pornography, weapons sales, stolen goods brokering, etc. . . they go hand in hand.
We are sliding into the abyss as a society!

YQLDude

We should start a war on drugs! Nixon’s was very successful obviously and there were no more drugs for decades. What could go wrong?!

biff

novel idea! however, we need to take it to another level, and be sure to summarily execute anyone dealing drugs (sorry pharmacies), peddling them (sorry doctors), and even using them (sorry all you folk that help make the multi billion dollar houses of torture where pharms routinely hurt, make sick and kill sentient creatures).
now, who best to lead this war on drugs…hey, based on their resume here, what with having been in more war zones and the like, and, fearing only god (and, i suspect, the baby jesus)…let’s give it up for r.u serious. all hail general r.u serious!
