Closure of Scenic Drive intersection gave respite to nearby residents

By Lethbridge Herald on July 21, 2023.

Editor:

Please pass along my thanks and appreciation to the road crews working in Lethbridge that closed the 13th St. S. and 16 Ave. S. intersection where 16 Ave. S. also intersects with Scenic Drive for several weeks. The effect on those living in the area was profound: A respite from constant honking and loud swearing as motorists narrowly avoid collisions at that ill-designed intersection, reduced traffic noise as fewer people could travel in the area and had to do so at much reduced speeds.

The several weeks of ongoing closure were bliss. Now that they are ended, we’re back to our daily forbearance. Can’t wait until this intersection is redeveloped. I’ve seen the plans, they’re delightful!

Issue is speeds coming off Scenic n/b turn lane. Take that out and it becomes a red light stop and turn. Same with s/b 13 to 16th, take out the right turn ramp and make a right turn lane with light. Put a median on 16th which ensures those turning n/b on 13th from 16th have to proceed to where they can’t cut across 13th into the lane for s/b traffic, shortcutting the corner. For the right turns do as they do at Tudor Cr and College Drive, No right turns on red, can specify hours or go for round the clock. In short there are too many places to look where there is no control of the flow so need to slow things down.
Or cheap out and cover the whole area with rumble strips.
