UCP taking a more democratic approach to running Alberta

By Lethbridge Herald on October 13, 2023.

Editor:

I find it interesting that people have so quickly forgotten what the NDP did when they were in power.

One of their first and most drastic actions was to shut down every coal mine in the province that generated electricity.

It didn’t matter that Alberta had technology that surpassed any nation in the world, and that we could use coal so efficiently that there is virtually no impact on our environment.

Many of these coal projects had lengthy contracts attached to them that Alberta taxpayers will be paying out for years to come, costing us almost a billion dollars. Meanwhile it immediately increased the cost of electricity, and that cost continues to escalate.

Not only did many lose their jobs, it put entire communities in dire straits. People lost their homes or saw their value plummet and some families have never recovered from it.

There was no phasing out, no discussion, no education; just a top-down decision by the NDP.

In contrast to the authoritarian manner in which the NDP ran our provincial affairs, the UCP is using a more democratic approach. They have just introduced the possibility of an Alberta Pension Plan.

They are providing time for educating the populace, for discussion and sufficient time to consider the merits of this proposal, ending with a referendum to allow citizens to decide! This is the leadership Albertans deserve.

Oh Fescue, your whataboutism doesn’t sail in this instance. Your link goes to tougher regulations, not shutting them down completely. Fail.
The same applies to the approach currently by the UCP with respect to an APP. Consultation, studies, surveys, referendum (possible) in contrast with the NDP “You’re stealing our pension”, which basically means Notley thinks she knows what is best for everyone and could care less what anyone thinks about democracy. She’s a my way or the highway type of person. Show us something constructive other than “theft”. Lol.

So how do you explain why thousands of Alberta Conservatives were smart enough to vote for her in this last election knowing these reformers have got to be stopped?
If you think an Alberta Pension Plan will work you are a damn fool and lawyers, accountants, oilmen, bankers we talk to know it won’t. Four million people can’t provide what 40 million can and Alberta’s unstable economy won’t let it.

Yes Jill, a much more democratic government than the economy wrecking, social ingineering, authoritarian NDP! Have yet to see a province that prospered under these socialists! Yet you still have fools voting for them!

John P Nightingale

“Fools” ? Yes indeed. Only thing is it the UCP beholden, who are the foolish.

Yes “Fools!” Now you would not be one of them would you John? Oh never mind I think I know the answer.

Jill why don’t you give us a list of exactly what the NDP did to us when they were in power? I know some lawyers who would be interested in hearing it. They know Notley was on the right track.
The fact is she was trying to get us back to the Lougheed era of collecting proper royalties and taxes and running the province properly like he did and Alaska and Norway are doing. Are you going to blame her for increasing corporate taxes by 2 % as a start and building 55 new schools we desperately needed, like these Reformers have bashed her for doing?
Do you think cutting 16% corporate taxes down to 8% was a smart move, because that’s what these reformers did for their friends. Can you imagine how many Billions we have lost? Are you aware that the power industry fully supported switching to gas fired plants, or don’t you care about the pollution it produces no matter how it was used? My late father was a Power Plant Engineer and he certainly knew and how do you blame Notley for something Harper started?

Did you notice they increased our debt far more quickly than she did and are you going to ignore the $260 billion orphan well cleanup mess they dumped in our lap? Can you explain to those of us from the world of finance how an Alberta Pension Plan would work in a province where the economy is the worse in Canada for it’s ups and downs and where Smith is going to find the money to fund it properly when they are giving it all away to their rich friends? I think you have a lot of learning to do and should stop listening to the lies these Reformers have been feeding you. .

Some of your points are just laughable. Coal mining and then burning of same leaves virtually no pollution behind.

Educating the populace about the APP. You mean brainwashing. Their information is just a bunch of totally unrealistic, made-up numbers.

This current government cannot be trusted!!!

More democratic? No. Here’s more of what might be, or probably, going on:
“As attendance soars for UCP meeting, Smith tries to blunt Take Back Alberta drive. Control of the party’s apparatus is what’s at stake here, with serious potential for another UCP upheaval.”

As the question is going: Who is it? Premier Danielle Smith or Premier David Parker?
